Passion, ambition, and treachery collide in this compelling drama about the early years of King Henry VIII's infamous 40-year reign. With a lust for power and an appetite for love, this young Monarch (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) rules his kingdom as he lives his life - with ruthless abandon. Affairs of the state carry little interest for him, and official matters are left to the powerful Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (Sam Neill), while England's ruler tends to his own desires.

This engaging and thrilling drama also stars Natalie Dormer, Jeremy Northam and Gabrielle Anwar.

Remember it is a drama first and foremost

I only finished watching this on DVD last night and can say that it does not fail to live up to expectations.

From the costumes, the scenery and settings, acting and storyline, this is excellently put together. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that I, like a lot of other people on here, feel that the true course of history could have been slightly more adhered to.

Do not let any of this stop you from seeing this though as it is one of those programmes that makes it hard not to watch the next one and then the next one etc. and before long you realise that you have watched them all!

This is a great series, OK may not be 100% accurate, but close enough to history to not make it a farce. This shows the rise to power of one of the most well known monarchs is British history, and his war against the Catholic church..... The whole cast is superb, with the 3 main factions (the Boleyn's, the Catholics and the Kings supporters) well portrayed. The first series is quite heavy on the sex, however as Henry was supposed to be a very virile king, I suppose that can be justified. My one small criticism is that sometimes it feels like they put so much in for shock value. Although I watched it when it was shown on the BBC, bought it as it is definitely one I will watch again.

 Historical Balderdash......

No, No, No, Full of historical inaccuracies. Studied Henry VIII for 3 years at University, saw the screening on BBC, Hated it. I have given this 1 star for the musical score. Do they expect us to put this sort of DVD into our collection? Try, The Virgin Queen, Sorry...

 BRILLIANT DRAMA, HISTORICAL RUBBISH

This is great drama I enjoyed it immensely, it was put together brilliantly both in script and production, also the casting was impressive. All that said this is not to be used for school history homework, not just because it can be a bit raunchy but the historical accuracy is way out, every now and again some fact comes into to play but most of it is fiction.
Buy this if you like well made, well scripted and well produced sexy drama, but if you you like your history to be accurate shy clear and watch the discovery channel.
"Why the 5 stars" i hear you say, "your slating the historical factor", well I'm giving it 5 stars quite simply because it is a drama not a documentary and as dramas go this one hits the mark.

 Fantastic Series!!

This is a fascinating period of history which is retold with all the pomp and circumstance of the period but with fantastic acting quality.
As stated in other reviews there are some deviations from historical fact as we all know but just go with it!
I don't think Simon Sharma will have enjoyed this but you certainly will! HD version is worth the extra!!
