On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia (Kiera Knightley) strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching Cecilia is their housekeeper's son Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), a childhood friend who, along with Briony's sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge.
By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had never before dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger girl's scheming imagination, and Briony will have committed a dreadful crime, the guilt for which will colour her entire life.

Joe Wright does an amazing job with this film, sticking amazingly close to the books, and doing it justice. As the Mirror said, it is as close to perfect as a film can get.
The severity of scenes is fantastically done, and the subtle changes in lighting or camera movement brilliantly reveals the characters state of mind. I think that James MacAvoy and Keira Knightly do an excellent job of playing Robbie and Cecilia, and the three actresses that play Briony are brill.
This film isn't just a simple story of a tragic romance, it is about why we tell stories, the lies behind them. I would recommend this to anyone, however females do "tend" to enjoy this more. The whole story is a brilliant consept and excellently captured. I can guarantee you will not be able to draw yourself away from this tale of love, war and lies, and trying to "Atone" for the terrible thing that was committed.
Fantastic plot

This is up there with all those great love stories (gone with the wind, english patient, dr zhivago etc). I just loved it from start to finish. I personally really felt sorry for briony and although the ending was good, i didn't like it. What amazes me is that it was virtually ignored when the oscars came around. I recommend this to anyone who like the films i mentioned earlier
worth a watch
