It is always a pleasure when a movie is much better than you expected it to be and 'La Vie En Rose' is most definitely one of those movies.
Basically it is the story of French singing legend Edith Piaf and Marion Cotillard is simply fantastic in the role of Edith. It is a performance to treasure and she fully deserved her Oscar.Don't let the fact that the film is subtitled put you off. This is a very well made film with excellent acting and a moving and at times agonising story.

To those who want to know a little more about Edith Piaf and her life then this Academy Award winning film is one way to go about it. The film is subtitled as the language is French but this should not put off anyone as you soon forget that you are reading while you are watching. The film captures the life of Edith Piaf from a very young girl to her untimely death. It is a very sad film and I was left wishing that somehow I could have lived at that time and done something to prevent the death of one of the greatest if not the greatest singers to have come out of France. The film is made with images of Edith at the end of her life interspersed with images at the various stages of her career. This in my opinion lends to enhance the mood of the film as you feel even more for Edith. A truly remarkable film and a truly remarkable lady.

i was barely aware of edith piaf, but after watching the BAFTAs where this film recieved so many nominations, i wanted to watch it. a master class in acting, especially from marion cotillard, who played piaf.
as for the 'non stop misery and humiliation' etc..., what did you expect? its about her life, so it really couldnt be shown as anything else. im also glad this wasnt made in hollywood, as i think this movie would have suffered as a consequence. this dvd is fantastic value for money. highly recommended!

Customer rating: 2 out of 5 stars Difficult to watch

No wonder Marion Cotillard won an Oscar for her role as Edith Piaf in this typical Oscar-film. She really IS good as the singer grooving up on the streets of Paris just to become a big star.

But the problem with La Vie En Rose is the non-stop misery and humiliation. It is extremely difficult to watch; as an audience you don't get time to swallow the first misery before the next one appears.

Maybe the film is 'A magnificent masterpiece', but it is difficult and tough to watch. Your feelings get hurt SO much that it is almost impossible to enjoy.

I bought this after hearing how good Marion Cotillard is in it and I was not disappointed. Performances as good as this do not come along very often.
The story itself flashes back and forth to various parts of Edith Piaf's memories and is interesting and moving but the thing that left me at the end of this film was Marion Cotillard's performance. See it for this if nothing else.

Great film! Marion Cotillard totally deserves her Oscar! You really feel for her character all the way through the film as she acts out Edith Piaf's life from a teenager to adulthood, and shes a really good singer :)

I purchased this film after seeing clips of it at the Bafta's and it was so worth the money! The best film I have seen for years. An outstanding performance as Edith Piaf for which the actress truly deserves an oscar! Incredible!

Marlene Dietrich labelled the voice of Edith Piaf as 'the soul of Paris'. And this is one thing that the film has a lot of, soul. Telling the harrowing true story of the humble and bleak beginnings of a singer that the world would come to embrace, La Vie En Rose is one of the best bio pics ever produced.

The film hops back and forth from her childhood living in a brothel, to following her father in the circus, to the most expensive hotels in New York.

While the film is almost technically perfect from the script, direction and the supporting cast, it is Marion Cotillard's stunning portrayal of Edith Piaf that is spellbinding. It is a very honest study of the character too, we are shown that she wasn't the easiest person to be around, whether as a teenager, a star, or even in her old age.

A truly fascinating piece of work that deserves to clean the boards at next years Oscars.
