Speed Racer lives for racing. He is a born winner with an aggressive, instinctive, and fearless approach to the track. Having racked up victory after victory behind the wheel of his unstoppable Mach 5 vehicle, he faces the deadliest decision of his life - partner up with a rich mogul cheat for safety or risk his life to save the spirit of his sport and compete in the definitive, death-defying, cross country rally, The Crucible.

The death of his brother, the legendary Rex Racer (Scott Porter), in a mysterious racing accident ten years earlier has urged Speed (Emile Hirsch), the son of car-designer Pops Racer (John Goodman), to carry on his brother's legacy. Speed's own success results in the discovery that some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless sponsors led by the sinister Mr Royalton (Roger Allam). In the knowledge that Royalton will see to it that his Mach 5 will never cross a finishing line again if they do not join forces, Speed's fate hangs in the balance as he decides which path to take.

The Wachowski Brothers, creators of The Matrix trilogy, have produced the ultimate live-action adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s Japanese anime series Mach Go Go Go in this beautifully shot visual feast that will appeal to the whole family. Full of exciting, brilliantly-conceived races, primary-colour characterisations, and an irresistible sense of fun Speed Racer is an entertaining, superbly directed blockbuster that is unlike anything you have seen before.

Like the Wachowskis' previous efforts, this film is full of ideas - unfortunately not all of them are good. At least it has a distinctive look, but this is by far the worst script they've produced to date. I'm not sure if this was aimed for young children, but they're the only ones who will be able to fully enjoy this mess. Three stars for the look and the effort, none for the story or script.

The Wachowski bros sure do know how to thrill with the FX, but when it comes down to making a film that has characterisation the brothers do struggle.
This latest film is no exception, based on the Japanese gordy coloured cartoon, the film is a kaleidoscopic sugar rush of colour, so much so it's enough to induce a migraine, so take the sun glasses. The film has many over amped race sequences, but all being so obviously CGI the film fails to engage, and with no propper story and under-written chatacters, the film feels like a extended episode of the cult cartoon, or even a computer game.
This film is aimed at the kids, and they will enjoy the tacky aspects, but for adult wanting something more satifying for a summer Blockbuster I suggest you wait for Indy 4!

..A real awesome and visually spectacular film..

Despite what most people say about 'Speed Racer', I found it to be a great piece of work! It's a whizzy and outrageously colourful family action romp with visually breathtaking hybrid animation and live action. The story may feel about as gripping as a videogame, but the film is pure eye candy! Kids film? This movie is a treat for all ages!

A fun movie to bring out the kid in you

I have to admit, I only went to see Speed Racer because of my teenage infatuation with Matthew Fox (Jack from Lost). I wasn't really expecting much - Just some mildly entertaining action sequences and a chance to see the very pretty Matthew Fox. :)
However, I was pleaseatly surprised by Speed Racer. It took a while to get going, but once it did, it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. The visual effects are stunning and the concepts are unique and original. The performances won't win any serious awards but they're fun and nobody seems to be taking themselves too seriously.
Speed Racer also seems to be unique in the effect it has on people - Maybe it was all the pick n' mix I ate at the cinema, but I seemed to go in to see Speed Racer as a 17 year old girl and come out as a 6 year old boy - That is the magic of Speed Racer! :)
