A tense political tale involving murder, intrigue and corruption, Defence of the Realm showcases award-winning performances from both Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) and Denholm Elliott (Room With a View) as two hard-nosed reporters in over their head. With solid support from Greta Scacchi (White Mischief) and Ian Bannen (Waking Ned), David Druryís direction ensures that the tension mounts to a spectacular climax.
Nick Mullen and Vernon Bayliss are reporters who receive an anonymous tip-off that a political scandal is about to break. MP Dennis Markham, a friend of Vernonís, is photographed leaving a call girl's flat and two hours later an East German military attache is photographed going in. Whilst Nick delves into Markhamis affairs, Vernon is interested in a different angle. When Vernon suddenly dies, Nick begins to realise that the story goes far deeper than anyone imagined and that he is now very definitely in over his head...

This was one of the first DVDs I ever bought, and it's still well-played! This tale will grip you right to the end, but, I have to warn you - you must pay attention right from the get-go, even listen to the radio news headlines in the background!
The scenario is fairly credible and the whole story is well-acted, with a great contribution from the late, lamented, Denholm Elliot in his "morose" mood. You can purchase this movie with no fears that you're wasting money - in fact, I urge you to invest!
