I was at the 29th May concert at the RAH, and it was one of the best nights of my life. Absolutely brilliant from start to (almost*) finish. The only tiny minus point of the evening was when David forgot the words to On An Island on the second verse, but that version isn't on the DVD anyway...
Even at 60 years old, David Gilmour still sounds better than many so-called singers out there today, and his guitar-playing is second to none.
The title I supplied to this review was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but also to say that with the chances of Pink Floyd ever touring again are practically zero, the next best thing is to see the individual artists playing together. What's in a name? If David, Rick Wright and Nick Mason play together, as they did on the last evening at the RAH, who cares if they call themselves Pink Floyd or not? The music is just as good!
* I had to leave early to catch the train, so I missed Arnold Layne and Comfortably Numb, both with David Bowie, so I'm so glad they're both on the DVD!
I was there for the 31st May show - (Nick Mason on drums for WYWH and Comfortably Numb = Awesome), Can assure you this entire thing is completely up to scratch. Echoes is probably the highlight on here, first time played live since 1987 i believe, and boy did it sound good, the whole band clicked, David's vocals were superb (See Find the Cost of Freedom), his guitar work even better, but you'd expect no less from the maestro. Guy Pratt has grown up since the P*U*L*S*E tour, and seemed much more focussed, rick wright's vocals left a little to be desired, he's certainly lost his voice with age (Comfortably Numb/Arnold Layne - not the Bowie versions obviously). Overall however, an extremely tight performance, and stunning visuals, topped with the fantastic intimate atmosphere of the Royal Albert Hall. I for one salute this entire performance.
This is one of the best music dvd's i have ever had. I have seen David Gilmour in Milan in March 2006. The set list was nearly the same as the dvd. Now I can enjoy this concert on my state of the art 5.1 surround sound. The picture and sound quality are incredible. Gilmour is a terrific guitar player. Echoes performance is fantastic. I t has never been filmed since live at Pompeii!!! And echoes alone is worth the whole price of this dvd.
This dvd is a must for music lovers. It has it all - great picture (well filmed) and very good sound.
...but Gilmour's voice was a little strained at times, compared to Pulse (but then that was 13 years ago). But boy can he play guitar! Really enjoyed Bowie's performance on Arnold Layne - his voice was made for that song.
I just wonder why Floyd dont record or tour. This concert features Richard Wright and several members of the extended Floyd live band :-|
One word - Echoes
Gilmour is on fire
Wright's got his mojo back
