In 1962 comedy writers Alan Simpson and Ray Galton wrote a new comedy pilot for the BBC's Comedy Playhouse. Set in a house and a yard full of junk, it featured rag and bone men Albert Steptoe and his son Harold....

The complete collection of Steptoe and Son contains every episode including the pilot episode and the Christmas specials!

 The Ultimate in British comedy

Id been waiting a long time for this and the wait was well worth it. I had been holding of the urge to buy the diffrent series in dribs and drabs. Now you can get the complete 58 episodes (including the 2 Christmas specials) in one go. I recieved my boxset just days ago and have had a steptoe marathon as i have just broken my two of my toes and have had plenty of time sat on the couch.
The boxset itself is is nicely presented opening up like a book holding 13 discs. Some of the early BW episodes as mentioned in a previous review are grainy however once the dialogue between these two great performers starts its hardly noticeable as your eyes are filled with tears of laughter! Theres been some mention about the two feature length epidodes Steptoe and son and Steptoe and son rides again, Both these episodes are not included as the BBC did not distribute these episodes it was actualy EMI.To complete your collection you can pick up these Two feature lengths for about a fiver from play.com.
I would highly recomend this boxset without a doubt this is the ultimate in British comedy.

I couldnt leave without mention of one of my favourite old man Steptoe quotes from one of the Xmas specials.
"Ive just put the puddings in can you smell em?...Nice and dark they are....Black as a gorilas goolies."

 The Best Sitcom

I actually bought these series individually but have felt compelled to write to say that, seeing as there aren't any extras to the boxed set, this is undoubtedly THE best sit-com of all time. Okay, the picture quality isn't the best but the word quality and play on words is superb. How Galton and Simpson could write the amount of episodes, with just two main characters is astouding. And the fact every episode is brilliantly scripted and acted is a testiment to everyone who worked on it.

There are many times when political correctness is not high on the agenda but the humour and storylines is still first class. And tributes have to be paid to Harry H Corbett. He really was brilliant and a very under-rated actor. In fact, as Harold Steptoe he was TOO good. For Steptoe at its peak watch 'Divded We Stand'. In one word.....classic

 Quality

I was fortunate to receive this on Christmas day. The down side was 'she' doesnt get it so I have stick it on when other more 'important' things like hair salons and shopping beckon. Like Rigsby - its more than delivering lines. To look at 2 people for half an hour on the same set, episode after episode year after year would sound pretty boring but not when you have 2 superb actors at the top of their game.

The earlier ones were brilliant and it just got better.

Why oh why can't today's comedy writers and casters sit down and take note of how comedy's should be done. All we have to show in the 000's are flogging a dead 'horse' spin offs from Fools and Horses and middle class rubbish.

Every episode of one of the greatest comedies of all time!

Top 100 Games Reviewer

Yes - it does contain the 1973 and 1974 Christmas specials!

Steptoe and Son is still one of the finest British comedies ever commited to film and this complete set is an absolute bargain. It is also in a nice, compact box which will take up much less space than the individual DVDs do.

As for one reviewer's complaint about the quality of some of the episodes, this is due to the fact that the BBC would routinely erase their tapes as recently as the late seventies, meaning many of the original recordings have been lost. This means that some of the episodes have been sourced from secondary tapes, all of them never anything less than watchable, however. That means this set is probably as good as it's going to get, so don't hold your hopes up (or save your cash for) a remastered edition, as it would need something close to a miracle for us to ever see one.

Just a note to remind those buying 'complete' box sets that 'christmas speacials' mean just that...these are always 'normal' episodes that go out around christmas time, have a christmas theme etc. Sometimes they may be slightly extended but they are NOT Feature Films. So those thinking they have been short changed when a box set doesn't contain two full length films as well need to think again. The box set says all 'episodes' that is, normal length tv weeklys and the Christmas Specials which are also just episodes...Ride Again and the original Steptoe and Son were Feature Films therefore NOT episodes as you would normally understand it. I would not have ever expected them in a set marked as all episodes and christmas specials...not Play's mis selling, perhaps your mis interpretting ... The features, as you can see are available in a set of their own...As for buying individual sets then being dissapointed when mega sets come out, that's just a reminder to hold your guns a bit..why buy a movie you love for example knowing that there's going to be a sequel or two when you know for sure they will be released as a box or gift set down the line...we've all done it once at least but we learn by it. I was working hard on Only Fools and Horses and you can see how many are there to buy and they are still way expensive individually then...they bring out a mega set, everything ever made...doh ! live and learn eh?
