Roland Rat, Margaret Thatcher; Rubik's Cubes, the Royal Wedding; aerobics, skinheads... It's 1983, and the schools are breaking up for summer.

Shaun is 12 and a bit of a loner, growing up with his mum in a grim coastal town, his dad was killed fighting in the Falklands War. On his way home from school, where he's been tormented all day for wearing flares, he runs into a group of skinheads, who against expectations turn out to be friendly and take him under their wing. Soon Shaun discovers parties, girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models in Woody, Milky and the rest of the gang. But when an older, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison, the easy camaraderie of the group is broken, and Shaun is drawn into much more uncomfortable territory...

Another fantastic story, brilliantly told by director Shane Meadows and his stunning cast.
Tells of how easy it can be to become involved with the wrong people and wrong thinking.
Some people just want respect, others want to fit in.
Brilliant performances by all concerned especially the main kid at the centre of it all and Stephen Graham who plays combo.
Also it was nice to see the kid from A Room for Romeo Brass playing Milky.
Highly Recommended

Visual poet Shane Meadows has done it again. Two years after the incredibly powerful "Dead Man's Shoes" Meadows's autobiographic "This is England" is his 5th full length feature and probably his best to date. Twelve-year-old Shaun (Thomas Turgoose ) is bullied at school and, against all odds, finds some peace with a group of original skinheads. All seems well until Combo (Stephen Graham) returns to the scene after three years in the slammer. He soon manages to twist the skins around his little finger and introduces them to the ideals we nowadays recognize as typical for skins. Shaun's world is rocked again and he soon finds he will have to make a very hard choice. Gripping, compelling, moving, violent yet utterly beautiful.
A must-see if ever there was one!

 Great, just great!

I just watched this on FilmFour tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm too young to remember the 80s but it clearly depicted the era well and the acting was brill. Some parts made me laugh and some parts almost made me cry (I probably would've if there weren't others in the room). A great drama and I would recommend it to anyone, truly a British masterpiece.

 Awesome

To be honest I didn't expect this film to be the best watch, I just wanted to see what it was about. But I'm glad I watched it. It made me smile, made me angry, made me laugh, made me cry. I was glued to it all the way through, the setting was perfect and the acting was so real - nobody trying too hard to be the 'star', although the kid was excellent all the way through, the part was made for him. Us British don't turn out too many great films but this is by far one of the best films I've ever seen. I
