For the past two or so years, Catherine Tate has released some exceptional coasters (packaged in DVD boxes). The discs inside have certainly kept the coffee remnants off my dining room table fairly adequately.
I made the unfortunate mistake of putting *this* Christmas Special coaster in the DVD player to see what would happen. As expected, a whirlwind of inept monotony splattered across the screen with all the ambitiion and grace of a grey piece of phlegm. For the first time in DVD history, a studio audience whose laughter feels forced. I'm sure if they had included a making-of documentary for this programme, we'd see the floor runner holding up the "Laugh" sign - and next to him, a couple of masked men with machine guns in case the audience forgot to laugh.
To say that the worried look on the face of your oncologist is funnier than this Christmas special is to vastly understate the material, and tate's talent. Catherine roundly resorts to swearing and impromptu singing sessions for her craft; all of which are grossly unfunny. The laugh count on this DVD could be equated to a Ken Loach drama. It's *unusually* unfunny. It's actually quite depressing. I'm sure psychology students could use this as a study on viewers to see how delighted they were before and after they watched this dreadful, embarrassing slop.
And - a lifetime first - George Michael's cameo is years away from being spotted before it actually happens. Hint: If that nurse starts singing a George Michael tune - in a Christmas special - it'd take an amoeba to NOT figure out who's behind the cutain. Don't get me wrong, such treats can be great and really heighten the enjoyment factor. In this special it feels forced, and you almost want to cry for all involved. Almost. Until you realise they now have your ten quid.
But is this "special", as the title indicates? Why of course. It's special in the sense that "special children" are "special". Poor ickle Catherine, tried so hard, oh how cute... okay, move her into the other room, the important guests have arrived...
Stop Complaining

I am tried of reading peoples boring comments about this show! It was brilliant with a fantastic guest cast. Cathy Burke was on form and a brilliant piece of casting as Nan's daughter. Catherine's send up of George Michael was worth watching for that alone. If you don't like it, don't buy it! I never understood how people complain about shows like this when they are on TV as every TV has an On/Off button! I would recommend this to anyone and have watched it a few times since its release. It is one of a very few on TV worth watching and has left a gap in a rather boring TV schedule in the New Year!

She may have run her course with this show's format, but she's still more inventive as a comedienne than most people writing for British TV today, at her worst she could knock spots of the likes of that dreadful rubbish with lee mack in it or most other BBC1/ITV "Comedies". She rules still and until someone better comes along - she'll do for me!

Having purchased the first two series,I thought Tate was a breath of fresh air,but oh dear, this show is truly pathetic, over relying on foul language with no genuine comedic content.Avoid!
Predictable..

Just like Little Britain, and even some of the last episodes of Bo' Selecta, us as an audience knew exactly what was coming. "Am i bothered" has gone beyond, and the unexpected burst of swearing from "Nan", is now, expected. Again with a sketch show, it's run it's course, and ran out of ideas
i nearly killed myself

Upon watching this I found myself asking "who actually finds this funny?" This is, quite simply, the most pathetic excuse for comedy ever witnessed by my eyes. Catchphrase after catchphrase, poor writing and no actual comedy involved. The BBC really has gone down hill if they consider this to be one of their best shows at present. It really wouldn't be out of place on Sky 3.
Bah humbug!

This was probably the worst of the so-called "specials" over xmas this year. Far too much swearing, not enough funny jokes. Its a shame tho, as the first 2 series were very good, but since series 3 she's been a bit pants really. BTW, George Michael was rubbish too! The only good thing was Kathy Burke as the rude Nan's daughter -but even that was well past its prime too.
Christmas Television At It's Very Worst

Scientists have recently concluded through research that men are funnier than women. Having been forced to watch this inane drivel on Christmas Day I would like to add to their research as I have come to the conclusion that absolutely everybody is funnier than Catherine Tate. The BBC should strongly re-examine what passes for 'Christmas Day entertainment' because this pathetically written material definitely wasn't it, but the BBC did save itself two days later by broadcasting one of the finest pieces of comedy to grace our television screens this year in the form of the 'Extras' special. I greatly look forward to that being released. The only only thing 'special' about this DVD is just how bad it actually is.
