It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and Ben (Joel David Moore) has reached booze and boobs overload. Recently dumped and pining after his girlfriend, he enlists his pal Marcus (Deon Richmond) to accompany him on a swamp tour in a boat that travels the spooky murk surrounding the city. Marcus is less than enthused until the crew of the low, low, low (low) budget movie "Bayou Beavers" signs on, including amateur cameraman Shapiro (Joel Murray), pneumatic Misty (Mercedes McNab) and ditzy Jenna (Joleigh Fioreavanti). Joining them on the rickety cruiser are the painfully wholesome couple Mr. and Mrs. Permatteo (Richard Riehle and Patrika Darbo) and the beautiful-but-sullen Marybeth (Tamara Feldman).

Led by the P.T. Barnum of the swamp tour industry, fast-talking but slow-thinking showboater Shawn (Parry Shen) the tourists are decidedly underwhelmed by the fog, low-hanging branches and aggressively quiet sounds that Shawn tries to pass off as frightening. He launches into the story of Victor Crowley - yup, a legend in these parts - who is known to haunt the swamp. The boaters wave off the story as part of Shawn's continuing nonsense - except for Marybeth, who is notably discomforted.

It is what it is... just a great, entertaining splatterfest.

I don't think you should pay mind to some reviews for this. You have to understand that this movie doesn't try to be anything other than a good old fashioned splatterfest.

The characters are not made to be deep or anything like that, they are what I like to call the typical horror style "lambs to the slaughter" characters. They each have their funny moments thrown in for entertainment, but overall they are not meant to be anything more than people to provide the body count.

If you are looking for an original horror movie with a real edge of your seat, plot-twisting storyline then avoid this movie. If however you are an avid horror movie fan who does appreciate a genuine good horror movie, but also enjoys a flat out 80-90 minutes splatterfest then watch this. It is by far one of the best gorefests you are most likely to come across.

The blood and gore is extremely over the top, like it should be. The death scenes are ridiculously violent and brutal... and entertaining. They are not just the same old "chick gets stabbed" or "dude has head cut off".. they are inventive.

I think the death scenes are truly wonderful, they are the stand out part of the movie, typified with the power sander to the face scene. That was just pure GOLD!

Victor Crowley is another great entrant to the horror/slasher movie icons. I think they could make a few Hatchet movies with him just running rampant and killing people in various manners... much like the Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies.

At his core, Victor Crowley is nothing new.. a disfigured killer with that same old backstory.. but it works you know. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. He is abnormally strong, you can't seem to kill him and you have next to no chance of escaping him. Its all good fun. And of course with the legendary Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees) playing him, you know you are getting a great killer to watch.

Cameos from horror icons Robert Englund and Tony Todd just add to the whole experience. Really, I think this is a very entertaining watch and if you love horror gorefests you will love this movie as I did.

i have to say this film really suprised me just how good it is. i usually hate horror/comedys but this has made me think twice, yea the acting is rubbish but what do you really expect and there are two famous faces from the film of horror in robert englund and kane hodder, loads of gore and laughs, great film

 Nothing new here

Alot of people have said that this movie is a new benchmark in horror. well its not, its just an updated version of old slasher movies that have some unrealsitic monster/human as the psycho killer. dont get me wrong the gore scenes are brilliant & the director has come up with a great storyline but its nothing new. The acting is pretty good but the blondie & the fat guy im sure have just been picked of the street randomly as the acting from the two is terrible

 SLASHING GOOD!!!

This is an amazing movie, infactthis is probably the best slasher movie ive seen. The story of why vicktor crawly killed people in the swamp is great, really good story. There's going to be a hatchet 2 comming out. This film will be like halloween, nightmare on elm street and friday the 13th because in 30 years time there will be a ramake but i hope they dont mess it up like the othere's by making a stupid story. Hopfully it wont, but any way this is an amazing film, really gory and cant wait until hatchet 2.
