From the dark, gothic imagination of iconic director Tim Burton, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a bloody tale of music, murder, melodrama and meat pies. Laced with black humour and seasoned with beautiful musical ballads, Tim Burton serves up a sugarplum tale of serial-killing barber Sweeney Todd and his desperate desire for revenge.

Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) a once timid law-abiding hairdresser who was unjustly imprisoned on the other side of the world for fifteen years has returned to London to seek vengeance. Armed with razors and the adopted guise of Sweeney Todd, Barker sets up business in his old barber shop above the pie-making premises of Mrs. Nellie Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter). Enlisting the help of the pie purveyor, Barker sets about targeting Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) who, along with his henchman Beadle Bamford (Timothy Spall), shipped him off to Australia on a trumped-up charge in order to poach his wife Lucy (Laura Michelle Spall) and baby daughter.

The grotty setting of Victorian London presents the perfect location for Tim Burton's gothic vision and with much-loved muse Johnny Depp pitched alongside the hauntingly talented Helena Bonham Carter; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is an irresistible set up. Burton's direction of this, his darkest and certainly bloodiest feature to date, is note perfect and, with the accompaniment of the disturbing and dissonant musical ballads of Steven Sondheim, has presented an eye-popping feast of horror, black comedy, and genuine heartache. Embodying elements of murder, abuse, and madness, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a macabre and moving musical movie that, much like one of Mrs. Lovett's meat pies, is fulfilling, drenched in blood, and full of surprises.

I went to see this at the cinema the very first day it came out because i knew it would be fantastic.
Johnny Depp is one the best actors around as he is so versatile and is so unpredictable in his choice of roles. Teamed with the amazing Tim Burton i knew i was in for a visual treat, i was not disappointed!!!
I was completely mesmerised for the entire film and was desperate to get my hands on the dvd the minute i'd walked out the screen. I was literally counting down the days for it's release and was one of the first people in the shop to buy it!
This is by far THE best Depp/Burton collaboration. My copy will be watched many, many times!
For all those people who 'had no idea it was a musical and would never have seen it if they'd known', it was always marketed as a musical and it was never kept a secret! It wasn't a conspiracy people!!

Awesome!!! (small rant about idiots, sorry)

I've always been a huge fan of Tim Burton films and also musicals, so I loved this film more than I can put into words. I went to see this at the cinema and was totally mesmerised throughout. I have been counting down the days untill it was released and am now about to buy my copy! (which will be watched way too many times lol)

Also, I couldn't believe that people were walking out my cinema because its a musical! Even a few friends who are huge Tim Burton fans turned their noses up at the idea of a musical! But do they think that way about Nightmare Before Christmas or the Corpse Bride... no... Idiots! (rant over)

Buy the film ITS AWESOME!!! xx

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

Tim Burton was always known to be a director that didn't attend to the Academy's personal taste. His movies were true auteur works, always with a Gothic stunning visual and stories there weren't always what it seemed. It was as if Burton were filming every movie on Halloween. Now, however, it's going to be hard for the Academy to ignore Burton's new film- definitely his best one. Sweeney Todd offers the unlikely pairing of musical and horror. And, man, it works splendidly.

The story begins with Benjamin Barker's arrest by Judge Turpin, a true personification of evil, a man who doesn't think twice in convicting Barker for a crime he did not commit. Sent away of London, he returns with a new facet: Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Until this moment on, his barbershop is scenery to grim assassination- through which the evidences of murder are kept hidden thanks to the help of Mrs. Lovett, the baker. Sweeney vows revenge against the judge.

Burton's direction is truly fantastic, exploring his already trademark visuals with bravura. This time, the dark pictures really suit the story, in a way that they both contrast each other; for no matter how dark the city is, it can't compare to the citizens that live within it. Sweeney, once a pure man, becomes the darkest of them all. And there is no better actor in the world that could portray this like Johnny Depp does. His performance is a defining one, one that goes far beyond the Jack Sparrows, Edward Scissorhands, or J.M Barries that Depp portrayed with perfection. Sweeney Todd is a man torn apart by vengeance, a man that answers only to the call of death. Depp illustrates the psychological factors of the character in subtle nuances, giving one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema. A true achievement that lives up to the excellence of the entire movie.
