Full Metal Jacket begins by following the trials and tribulations of a platoon of fresh Marine Corps recruits focusing on the relationship between Gunnery Sergeant Hartman and Privates Pyle and Joker. We see Pyle grow into an instrument of death as Hartman has foreseen of all of his recruits. Through Pyle's torment and Joker's unwillingness to stand up against it the climax of part one is achieved with all three main characters deciding their fates by their action or inaction.
The second chapter of Full Metal Jacket delves into Joker's psyche and the repeated referral to the fact that he joined the Corps to become a killer. When his mostly behind the scenes job as a combat correspondent is interfered with by the Tet offensive he is thrust into real combat and ultimately must choose if he really is a killer.

Full Metal Jacket is by far the best war movie ever made. It´s not as violent, action-filled and bloody as Saving Private Ryan, but like all of Kubrick´s films this is beautifully shot with amazing perfomances from all involved. Basically if you like Kubrick´s films then this is a treat, but if you like your war movies to have a lot of combat scenes you´ll probably be somewhat disappointed.
The film was shot in Fullframe, so this so called widescreen version has just black bars added to it so you´ll actually lose than get more image (same goes for The Shining). This method was used in the theaters but Stanley Kubrick wanted the audience to see the whole picture when watched from TV, that´s the reason why Full Metal Jacket and The Shining haven´t been available in Widescreen format before.
Another classic in stanley kubricks catalogue, the film just has to be watched, it certainley is not "just another war movie" the first hour at boot camp has some of the best acting, dialogue, drama and tension that i have ever seen. The casting of all the actors is perfect and when we get into the war side of things, it's the real deal. Can't believe the war sequences were shot in london.
Movie is more of an experience therfore it's hard to write a review. Defo one to watch.
One of the 1st films to actually show Vietnam from a personal view. From US Marine recruit training to the Tet New Yr Offensive which suddenly showed that being a major global power wasnt all it was cracked up to be. Kubrick gives a surreal and gripping feel to a war film which goes from a war mongering US Marine Sargeant Major during training to a dying female Vietnamese sniper whos death is drawn out by a squad of Marines who cant decide who delivers the final grace. Its a film that makes you think about futility. A war waged on propaganda and a war fought by Americans who dont belong and dont believe in what they are doing. Superb soundtrack as well that delivers. Great film and a must for anybody that wants to see a film that doesnt favor a side. Its 2hrs of American gung ho US Marine attitude gone wrong and questioned. It works.
This is a very hard film to watch as some of the things that happen during the bootcamp scenes are very graphic especially the bit in the shower which i recommend you skip over as it is really graphic. However looking past that the film has a good story and some great performances from ermey, baldwin, d'onorfio and modine. A must for any war fans
