Epic Vietnam action from brilliant director Stanley Kubrick. The film starts off with the training off soldiers from normal men into killing machines with no emotions. It then moves onto some epic action in Vietnam. There are some great battle scenes, it's not the usual Vietnam film set in the jungle as many of the fights were set in urban areas. In true Kubrick style it has plenty of classic dialogue. This is an all time classic and one of the best war films ever made.

The master of narrative brings us his own look at the Veitnam War, and believe me it ain't pretty.
The story will well written and moves along nicely, from the earlier scenes during the soilders training all the way to their battle scenes in the deepest and darkest corners of Veit Con territory.
The directing is exactly what you'd expect from the master, Stanley Kubrick, its stylish and original but doesn't distract you from the narrative and story.
The action is brutal and no holds bar, but its not ruthless and so much out of control that you lose interest. The movie mainly focusses on the soilders, their perception of the war and what exactly they're feeling. You're taking deep into the mind and soul of the helpless pawns who were dropped into the war.

Overall: Full Metal Jacket, much like most of Stanley Kubrick's movies is a masterpiece. It's entertaining, original, thought provoking and eye widening.
It's a brilliant piece of cinema, A Must See for any movie lover.

Not the easiest thing to watch

This is a very hard film to watch as some of the things that happen during the bootcamp scenes are very graphic especially the bit in the shower which i recommend you skip over as it is really graphic. However looking past that the film has a good story and some great performances from ermey, baldwin, d'onorfio and modine. A must for any war fans

The Godfather of war films. Kubrick expertly portrays the breakdown of the Marines at the Island before they are shipped out to Vietnam for "poontang". The class act is the helpless character, Private Pyles who gets a working over by the drill instructor and the dialogue is hilarious but also scary. The action questions the war itself, but more importantly gives an insight into how the soldiers feel about it. "In every gook, there is an American screaming to come out". Kubrick at his best.

Full Metal Jacket is by far the best war movie ever made. It´s not as violent, action-filled and bloody as Saving Private Ryan, but like all of Kubrick´s films this is beautifully shot with amazing perfomances from all involved. Basically if you like Kubrick´s films then this is a treat, but if you like your war movies to have a lot of combat scenes you´ll probably be somewhat disappointed.
The film was shot in Fullframe, so this so called widescreen version has just black bars added to it so you´ll actually lose than get more image (same goes for The Shining). This method was used in the theaters but Stanley Kubrick wanted the audience to see the whole picture when watched from TV, that´s the reason why Full Metal Jacket and The Shining haven´t been available in Widescreen format before.

 Classic Movie

Another classic in stanley kubricks catalogue, the film just has to be watched, it certainley is not "just another war movie" the first hour at boot camp has some of the best acting, dialogue, drama and tension that i have ever seen. The casting of all the actors is perfect and when we get into the war side of things, it's the real deal. Can't believe the war sequences were shot in london.
Movie is more of an experience therfore it's hard to write a review. Defo one to watch.

 Good but could be better...

I'm not going to write a review about Full Metal Jacket because the film needs *no* introduction. Instead, I will write about the DVD, what do you get for your money? OK, first there is only one DVD, yes one. There are three extras on this DVD: Commentary from Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey and Critic Jay Cocks. There is a new featurette and of course, the trailer. That's it. The commentary is very very good and very insightful. The featurette is OK, but the actors talk about Kubrick more than the actual film. But within all the extras there is no interview or commentary from Matthew Modine. I suspect that Mr Modine declined doing this DVD because he has a book about the making of Full Metal Jacket with various photographs. The commentary mentions the book also. If the DVD had Mr Modine's book 'included' in someway, this would had been the perfect DVD. Play.com have some details missing or in error. The language soundtracks include English, German and Spanish, with various subtitles, and the film is actually a '15' rating now. Watching DI Sgt Hartman in German is quite entertaining :o) Highly recommended.

One of the 1st films to actually show Vietnam from a personal view. From US Marine recruit training to the Tet New Yr Offensive which suddenly showed that being a major global power wasnt all it was cracked up to be. Kubrick gives a surreal and gripping feel to a war film which goes from a war mongering US Marine Sargeant Major during training to a dying female Vietnamese sniper whos death is drawn out by a squad of Marines who cant decide who delivers the final grace. Its a film that makes you think about futility. A war waged on propaganda and a war fought by Americans who dont belong and dont believe in what they are doing. Superb soundtrack as well that delivers. Great film and a must for anybody that wants to see a film that doesnt favor a side. Its 2hrs of American gung ho US Marine attitude gone wrong and questioned. It works.
