Heard and read glowing reports about this film, however when I finally got round to watching the film - I was very disappointed.

The film does highlight the plight of many Bengali women in this country in forced loveless marriages. However as a film goes this lacked depth.

Story was very predictable and the acting was second rate. Only scratches the surface of what really can/does go on behind close doors.

Recommend this film to be watched on a rainy Sunday evening in.

This film brought me close to tears a few times as it is wonderfully captured and beautifully moving. It shows the plight of many a woman who comes from that part of the world and marries in this country as my mother did.

I read the book when it was published. Last week I watched the film. It does full justice to the book and its author. It is a beautifuly and very sensitively made film. I felt I was reading the book while watching the film. Acting, screen play direction and photography are superb.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars A Very Real British Movie

A fantastic movie set in the part of London I have come to adore and cherish living in. The movie is well constructed and each character incredibly real. I don't want to get into the storyline and ruin it for anyone who has not yet seen the movie - all I can say is never judge a book by its cover and nobody's perfect. This movie far surpasses recent Brit flicks such as This is England, in that it does not patronise - its reality seems effortless and heartfelt. I didn't want it to end. I loved it!

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Testimony to the plight of so many Asian women

I thoroughly recommend this film to anyone who wishes to acquire an insight, sense of feeling or sounding of some aspects of Asian culture. As an 'outsider' to the Asian community I have personally become all too aware of the stark reality that doubtless confronts many women 'trapped' within the boundaries of cultural expectation, most especially with regard to relationships and the concept of the so called 'arranged marriage'. Whilst such 'marriages' may work for some, this film (as adapted from the book) captures the plight of a young woman who becomes enslaved in a loveless existence and who longs for so much more and beyond. This story probably mirrors and is sadly representative of that of many other Asian women who are silently suffering within their own individual experiences, after succumbing to the cultural expectations placed upon them. What was striking to me was the way that a woman is perceived within the confines of the marital relationship. She is seemingly presumed devoid of any individuality and merely something of a functional posession to perform both household and intimate chores, lacking any real love. If this is a typifies life within many households both in the UK and beyond, then this film surely represents a cry to the world outside as to the wrongs that are being done to many women due to male dominatation set within a framework of cultural expectation. A great film, very well acted and something that should be broadcast more widely, so as to properly acknowledge the plight faced by so many. Buy it!
