Brimming with action while incisively examining the nature of truth, Rashomon is perhaps the finest film ever to challenge perceptions of reality and justice. Through an ingenious use of camera and flashbacks, Kurosawa reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife. Toshiro Mifune gives another commanding performance in the eloquent masterwork that revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema to the world.

 Long overdue special edition

Rashomon is a seminal classic from legendary director kurosawa. It tells the same story of a rape and murder from several viewpoints, showing the subjectivity of truth - an incredibly bold and original move for its time.

This review is for the long overdue special edition which contains:

Documentary featuring original crew as well as the original screen writer and composer

Introduction from john boorman

Booklet containing the original stories that inspired the film

An extract from the very interesting 'the emperor and the wolf' book
About kurosawa and mifune's relationship and career together

Trailer

These extras in particular the discussions between the crew are fascinating and informative.

Overall a fantastic package for this classic film's first special edition in the uk!

 A masterpiece

The cinema of Japan was introduced to the Western audiences through this masterpiece at that time. Despite low budgets and only three locations being used in the movie, this movie is one of the masterpieces from Akira Kurosawa. Would definitely recommend everyone to buy this movie and enjoy it. Words can't express how amazing this movie is. You have to watch it yourself to experience one of the most brilliant movie of all time. Rashomon.

 the film that made kurosawa.

can a film that tells the same story four times ever be gripping? this one proves that it can. the three central characters twist the truth so that each tells a different version of events surrounding an act of rape and murder committed by a notorious bandit (mifune), they all claim to have acted with bravery and honour, but an impartial onlooker has a different story. even though we know the outcome from the start, the film still enthrals as a peculiar kind of thriller.

Few come close to the legend kurosawa

Akira kurosawa will always be known as one of the best directors around and this film is one of those reasons. The story is simple. . . a rape of a woman and a murder of her husband occurs. The story is told to a court by four people. The woman who was raped, the murderer/rapist, the spirit of the man who was killed and a passerby. When the truth is revealed it is amazing. A true masterpiece
