I love gangster films but not this one

It's not that everything about this film was bad; it's just that the few things that were bad were so bad, that it ruined the filmed.

The plot and characters were underdeveloped and unrealistic. The film pivots on a golden rule that as a gangster you can't kill inncoent people (such as children) otherwise you have to kill yourself. And if you don't kill yourself then another gangster will. Since when have gangsters taken such a moral high ground? Even if they did feel bad about killing innocent people, which is plausible, I really do struggle with the concept of so willingly commiting suicide because of it. By their very nature, gangsters are murderers and criminals, and the introduction of such an extreme rule is a contradiction of what they're about. There are no real moments of psychological struggle or raw emotion. Instead, the film is played out through action sequences by actors basing their characters on their 'cheeky chappy' accents.

 Hilarious and involving gangster comedy!

Martin McDonough's black comedy does tend to follow some conventions of the genre, as it follows Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell as Ken and Ray two assasins sent to Bruges to hide for a few days after something has gone wrong on a previous job.

With nothing else to do, they take a very different approach to spending some time in the town (Ken does some sightseeing and Ray can't stand the place - until he meest an attractive young womand and a dwarf actor making a movie in the town) until their last job's consequences begin to catch up with them and forces choices to be made.

Incredibly funny at times, there's also an emotional heart to the film as well that slowly pulls you in as the film progresses and as the truth of why our two fellows are hiding in Bruges in the first place becomes clear that leads to an almost dream-like conclusion that gives you the chance to perhaps decide on whether redemption is possible or not.

A truely excellent film!

This is one of those movies which is hard to sum up, you can't really talk about the story as there isn't much of one. It takes a while to find out why exactly there's an Irishman and Englishman in Bruges, why are they waiting for a phonecall, whats it all about.
It doesn't matter really, although the story isn't thick on plot it's thick on humour, there's laughs from early on till the end. Colin Farrell is at the top of his game, he delivers the lines with such conviction you want to burst out laughing. And it must be said Ralph Fiennes has no trouble playing his role as the London gangster, he comes across genuine which leads to a lot of laughs.

Overall: In Bruges is a hilarious film, there's a lot of laughs throughout but it must be said, if you're easily offended by F and C words then don't watch!
The language is colourful but so is the comedy, there's laughs from start to end.
Jet Black comedy, Highly Recommended

This is a weird but altogether a really entertaining dark comedy. I origionally had no interest in this film because i personally cant stand Colin Farrell but he was quite good in this. He and Brendan Gleeson play hitmen Ray and Ken who after doing a job that went wrong decide to stay a while in a small village in Belgium known as Bruges hoping for everything to blow over with their Londoner gangster boss played by Ralph Fiennes but that dont happen. The acting by all is brilliant and the comedy timing is impecable mixed in with a very good plot and great scenary makes me wonder why this slipped under the radar. Enjoy

 weird but wonderful!

this is a real oddball film about 2 hitmen ordered to lay low in bruges after a 'job' goes wrong(!). it has some genuinely, laugh out loud funny moments, a lot of dark humour, some highly emotional, poignant, and distressing scenes, an inventive and original storyline, and, if that wasnt enough, it is topped off by absolutely magnificent performances by all the main characters!. im not a big fan of colin farrell, but his performance here as hitman 'ray' is fantastic. ray is at heart, a happy go lucky, jack the lad type, who always needs to be doing something, always speaks his mind and acts on impulse (and hates bruges!), but under the surface he is utterly distraught, consumed by guilt and near suicidal, due to accidentally killing a child on his first 'job'. ken, on the other hand, the 2nd hitman, is an older, more experienced and laid back character played by the always brilliant brendan gleeson, ken is happy to be in bruges, as he loves the history, the architecture, and the atmosphere of the place. however he is forced to make a tough choice. he knows that ray's guilt is eating him up, but feels he is young enough to turn his life around if given the chance, but making this happen means defying his psychopath boss (played with gusto by ralph fiennes) who orders him to kill ray (as a punishment for killing the child), and who, upon hearing of ken's disloyalty decides to come over to bruges to sort things out himself!. its worth watching the film purely to see the interaction of the chalk and cheese characters of ray and ken!. make no mistake though, this film will not be everyones cup of tea, and is thoroughly deserving of its 18 certificate, but if you are the kind of viewer who prefers story to special effects, and are not squeamish or easily offended, you really need to give this a go!.

Well this is a strange one. Colin Farrel makes a good film! What a wierd, funny, shocking and brilliant movie!
The two assasins get some great lines: Colin Farrel trying to warn 3 fat American tourists that a long climb up a narrow bell tower may not be for them. "look at you, you're elephants!"
The Brendon Glesson says the Classic "Some night this is: two manky prostutes and a racist dawf!"

you'll either love it or hate but i urge you to try it.
