 Great Saturday evening entertainment

An ancient campfire tale of heroes, maidens and dragons, brought bang up to date with the latest computer animated graphics. Very entertaining, great Saturday evening entertainment, albeit very violent. At last the animators are starting to realise that there are things you can do with animation that will never be possible with real actors! At times the visual effects leave you breathless. Having said that, I thought the character animation lacked appeal and so I really didn't connect with any of the characters. Still, very well worth a watch, if for no other reason that to get a glimpse of the future of animation.

Good adaptation of this Anglo-Saxon classic poem

Not Welsh although Anthony Hopkins unaltered accent probably gave that impression.

Voices were disappointing except for Angeline Jolie. I would expect experienced actors such as Winston and Hopkins to at least *try* and give a Norse accent instead of their natural London and Wales respectively. Jolie was giving voice to a mythical demon and IMHO achieved her aim far better than anyone else.

CGI was good but as always eyes and volumetric effects (water, flames etc) looked false.

There were a couple of blatant errors in the CGI but I will leave the viewer to spot them (I've been told that one was deliberate and looks stylish. I disagree :))

As for changes, they always happen. Look at LOTR for an example of an excellent story where the director made (IMO bad) changes (seemingly) for the sake of it, or to give specific actors more screen time. Even after that the movies are all epics.

At 3183 lines it would be difficult if not impossible to retain everything of the original poem in a 2 hour film. However the major events do appear to have been retained.

 Impressive

OK, I've only seen the 3D IMAX version (jaw-dropping experience), but there's enough character and story here to sink your teeth into. Of course, if you're only going to watch it for the action and effects, you'll be bored by everything in between. However, it *is* based on an old story, and director Zemeckis really does want to immerse you in a tragic myth. If that doesn't sound like your thing, avoid Beowulf. If it does, treat yourself to an exciting, visually stunning film.

 LIFELESS EYES!

This CGI recreation of the old myth is amazing to look at, giving the most realistic creations ever. But no matter how impressive and realistic the effects are, I could not help thinking, why don't they use real actors, Angelina Jolie CGI recriation is just identical. But no matter how good things look the eyes of all the characters are still lifeless, this does distract from the whole experience.
Also the film takes it's self far too seriouse.
With the films faults, this is still a entertaining action packed romp, and should entertain most people.
This film is no classic, but is far, better than the pathetic Christopher Lambert 1999 effort, and is worth a look.
