But when he witnesses the brutal methods of persuasion being meted out the gang's leader, Ignatius Smith (Bernard Hill), Clutten decides to quit the gang. However, he soon realises that the gang would rather see him dead than leave them, and so he decides to steal some documents that would incriminate the criminal mastermind Edward Ross (Simon Ward) and expose his honest facade.
