There's something about this movie that I find continually captivating and enjoyable having previously had two VHS tape copies of it. For one thing you've primarily got four big name Hollywood stars on offer, all of whom contribute significantly to the general easy going engaging appeal of "Sweet Liberty". Now generally I'm not too interested in films depicting the American Revolution however this is one cinematic outing that charmingly pokes fun at history bringing the movie industry into direct conflict with Sayville's college professor Michael Burgess whom wrote the history book on which the film is supposed to be based on. It's beautifully shot, costumes (particularly used in the climactic mock battle sequence) are great, has a realistic feel to the central premise and the opening and closing themes have a slightly seductive mid 80s feel to them. I have to say that I was absolutely delighted to hear that it was finally gaining a DVD release earlier this year however now having nabbed a copy I feel a tad underwhelmed for a few reasons. Rather than an official Universal title this has been released through a company called Metrodome which not only offers up a number of pre film adverts but also I personally found the sound quality rather lacking and the purported 'Stereo' seems fairly minimal having watched it through my home cinema DVD set up. Yeah, I realise that you aren't going to get much in the way of extras but it would have nice to have raided the archives and at least pulled out a cinema trailer to further enhance customers enjoyment of this title. Still I'm not going to be totally negative about this because after all it is a truly beautiful cover that we've been presented with which offers basic synopsis, a few film stills and a photo of the scene where actor Elliott James, mounted on horse meets with actress Faith Healy as they film a scene for the fictious movie. We've also got twelve chapter points and a looped menu of the opening theme and scenes from the movie so at least its not as totally barren as for example you'd find on the "Nun's On The Run" film title. I cautiously welcome and applaud "Sweet Liberty" as a 102 min DVD title but feel with a little bit more effort it could of perhaps been even better. Despite its DVD title shortcomings I'm pleased that it's another film off my wish list and as a really great pleasing feature I'd certainly say that it is well worth getting!
