Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick.

Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Best film I have seen in ages

Very good film with little nods to the original. Loads of shots of the future world which is good. Action packed with a few twists thrown in for good measure. A little flavour of minority report, if you liked that film you'll be happily pleased.

 Glossy spectacle doesn't outshine Arnie.

A flop at the box office but notwithstanding that (or the fact that Paul Verhoeven probably isn't quaking in his books) the 2012 version of 'Total Recall' offers slick and glossy visuals for a couple of hours.

I found that it passed a rainy afternoon in the cinema just fine.

The storyline offers generally a similar experience to the previous version but with some changes made so no-one who saw the 1990 film will really be unclear about what's going to happen and it also looks like director Len Wisemen went overboard copying other (and in fairness, better) sci-fi films such as 'Minority Report' (in it's vision of future cities and highways), 'Attack of The Clones' (in the form of the new forces following the characters around) and there are some nods to the 1990 film as well.

Colin Farrell is pretty good as a more everyman version of Doug Quaid and Kate Beckinsale gets to play full on Vamp mode as his wife Lori. Although Jessica Biel and the rest of the cast get relatively short thrift. The action is non-stop and the visual effects glossy and to be honest, while it will never win any awards I didn't totally hate it either the way some critics did.

I'm afraid I cannot but compare it to the original. Despite the special effects the film cannot be saved. It lacks the black humour of the first for a start. The individual characters with their various traits as portrayed by the actors (Arnie, Michael Ironside etc) in first are missing. So rest assured I won't be buying Robocop.
