In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented - but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" - a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up.

Joe is getting rich and life is good... until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

  • Feature Commentary by Director Rian Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt
  • "Looper: From the Beginning"

I haven't seen director Rian Johnson's previous films but I have to say that in 'Looper' he's delivered one of the most satisfying and well made sci-fi films of the year, notwithstanding sometimes feeling as if he's blended bits of 'The Terminator' and 'Twelve Monkey's' as he went. That doesn't really matter here because the result is so engaging.

It does take a little while to begin, as Johnson eases you into the economically drained future society that Joe (the excellent Joseph Gordon Levitt) inhabits as he plays a man hired as a Looper. He assassinates people sent back from the future by criminal syndicates which control time travel in the future. This is all fine...............until one day the person sent back for him to kill is Old Joe himself (Bruce Willis). Discovering that in the future one shadowy Crime Lord is closing down the Looper system by sending them all back they both end up facing the realisation that here in their present events that unfold now could shape the future Old Joe already experienced..............or change it completely.

Although you could unpick the logic of it all that isn't what Looper is worrying about. As events lead them to an isolated farmhouse and a young woman (the perfect Emily Blunt) and her son Johnson invites much bigger themes and ideas that a good sci fi film can shade than questions about the relative sense of it all. With excellent performances, even from Willis, this is a fantastic sci-fi flick that mixes ideas and action very well and is highly recommended to sci-fi fans.

This movie has had lots of talk about being the best of yeah etc but is really over hyped, it is a good fun movie for a one off watch, it steals a lot from other movies and at points was boring, takes a while for any action to kick in, Bruce Willis is better than this, its worth a watch but its not as amazing as they say so dont get hyped up there are better sci-fi movies out there, the story is clever at times but the ending is very lacking but at least it was better than the new total recall.

This film definitely delivers the promised action, from the start it is made clear what a Looper is and what they are used for. As I got deeper into the film I found myself stunned with how good I was finding it. The acting was great from Willis, Gordon-Levitt and Blunt. The script and storyline was very solid and different and the effects were just something else. This is an absolutely great movie, but watch this with an empty mind, this requires your full attention for its action packed hour and 50 minutes.

Awful.... I dont want to watch porn!

The cover art and write up are amazing, really draw you in... but, the film itself, as it only says 'Contains strong language and bloody violence' on the back and doesn't say 'contains nudity'... it shouldn't, but it does.... also as I am a teenager I don't think it's appropriate for me to be able to buy stuff like this freely, over the counter! Also the fact he hunts children towards the end does not seem like it should be available for a child!

All in all, it's awful!!!

 Round Trip!

The trailers promise action and flashy effects, but don't go thinking you will see this. Looper is something different. This time travelling tale sets the ground rules of time travel being illegal and gangsters in the future send there kills to the past (although none too distant future) to be disposed of. That is until Joe (Joseph Gorden Levitt) fails to kill his future self (Bruce Willis) and fails to close the loop. This is the initial set up for one of the most interesting films of the year. As although the film is a time travel paradox dealing possible futures and fading memories as the future alters it works on a personal level of redemption. As Old Joe (Willis) hunts down the leader of a cult in the future who killed his wife only problem is the leader in young Joe's (Levitt) reality is only a child and has to be identified. As expected there is action now and again but it's the quieter moments in the film that give most impact, the childs stairs fall is captured silently but with massive impact. It's not going to be everyones taste as things do move slowly, but the overall impact of the film is haunting and lingers long after it has been ejected. Be patient and stick with it.
