It saddens just how badly this film done at the box office as it was by far my favourite film of the year.
A visually stunning piece of movie-making (and pretty violent at the same time).
If Dirty Harry lived in the future he would be Dredd. This film is genius, the best ive seen in years, cant wait for its release to see it again. Great story, great effects, great soundtrack, great cast. Urban is fantastic as dredd and gets the gravelling voice and aggressive chin perfect. Film is littered with great one liners such as "save me a lot of paperwork if you confessed right now" and "are you ready, you dont look ready" would make clint eastwood proud. The ladies hold up their side just as strong with Thirlby doing a superb job as Anderson and Headey as Ma Ma.
Buy it, its brilliant, its worth every penny, its up there with the greats like escape from new york and bladerunner.
This is an absolutely uncomprimising vision of the futuristic Mega-City 1 and its relentless lawman Judge Dredd. The movie feels like a genuine breath of fresh air among the recent years comicbook movie boom. The straightforward plot and simple story gives Dredd a distinctly old school feel. Combined with Paul Leonard-Morgan's score my thoughts were drawn to such classics as Escape From New York.
Best of all though is Karl Urban. He nails Dredd perfectly and remains true to the character to the extent of not removing his helmet even once during the entire movie. Olivia Thirlby is superb as Judge Anderson, the conscience and heart to Dredd's stone cold lawman with Lena Headey delivering a formidable villain in the shape of Mama Madrigal, a ruthless drug lord threatening the entire city.
The only movie I saw twice in the cinema this year, I wholeheartedly recommend Dredd to any action / sci-fi fan.
First of all the film is superb , one of my fav films of all time and bought the DVD on first day release.
I'm sorry though , no wonder this format is dying a death , you unwrap the plastic and eagerly open the case to find - what? - just a empty case with a disc stuck in it , the sort you get from the bargain bins and 2 pound films from 20 years ago , I had to have the volume set louder than any other film I have got and the ' special features ' are a joke , just a few interviews interspersed with scenes from the movie you have just watched , even then a lot of the stuff is repeated per interview with shocking editing between the interview scenes.
Everything about this product stunk ' cheapo ' which is a crying shame as this is a superb film and really should become a proper franchise.
it had its good moments. the storyline was quite good. however it bored me. same old thing throughout. just shooting in the same building.
