Yes Lee Childs sold out for this movie. I won't read another Lee Childs book, this is just the worst casting ever!

ok let me start by saying i havent read the jack reacher books by lee child but i will. a lot of hype came with this film so i had hope that maybe cruise had made a rare decent film, well sorry its average at best and i can understand the fury of jack reacher fans. there were so many better choices for the role, to many directors have allowed cruise to much say how he portrays characters and its happened here. i am now going to make a point of reading lee childs novels and meet the real jack reacher.

  Tom Cruise ! seriously !?

Jack Reacher,6ft 5" ,built like a Quarterback ,so,let's get Tom Cruise to play him ! Did Lee Child have any say in who should play the part of his title character ? As has been said before ,if you knew nothing of the books ,this maybe quite a novel film, but the more I watch of it ,the more I feel ,it just doesn't fit ! in the scenes where he is supposed to look intimidating (as a 6ft 5 brick out house might ) it just, doesn't have the same gravitas ! so, three stars, and that's being generous

Yes Cruise doesn't match the Lee Childs description of the character but...Cruise is great at being enigmatic and the film is action packed and moves at a great pace with no fancy 007 or Mission impossible gadgets, just a few cracked heads.

This is a refreshingly good action film - safe bet for a Saturday night on the sofa

Basic plot - Reacher is an ex- Army police investigator and trained to deal justice in a 2 million strong force of armed soldiers who now lives a nomadic lifestyle with no possessions to slow him down.
Reachers only link to civilization is his abhorrence at injustice so he does what the rest of us only dream about...he uses his unique skill set to redress the balance and right wrongs.

if you grew up on anti-hero's such as the A-team, Zorro, batman then you'll love this film, a few dark laughs as well...watch with confidence,

I'll be honest I have never read the books, but aware that the fans of the book complained that the written character is 6' 5" and Tom Cruise is about 3' 4" but that doesn't matter at all to me. The thing about this film is that it doesn't rely on action as it's the plot a that drives the film. Sure the plot is nothing we havn't seen before but it's all about exacusion speaking of which the opening scenes is very unsettling as the assassin picks his targets. It's Cruise's film and he is again brilliant, as he figures out that there is more to the lone gun man case. His sarcasm is very funny and the scene where he takes down five guys is a highlight, not to mention a thrilling car chase. The problem is there is so much good stuff that happens in the movie that the climax is a bit of a let down, I'm not saying it's bad as it wraps thing up, but we have seen this kind of shoot out too many times. But seeing Robert Duvall as a old school sniper is a treat.
As I said before I have not read the books, but after seeing this I know what I'll be reading on holiday.

Awful - like a TV movie

A clunky script and a director with ADHD with so many camera angles during badly written dialogue, I felt like I was watching CCTV footage.

The constant camera shifts led to jarring visual continuity errors such as ever changing eye-lines meaning the characters were shifting heights constantly - so much so, that Cruise, who initially is shown to be the same height as the lead female, is 3 foot taller (with heels!) at the end!

Cliched freak weather conditions to give the usual pointless fight in the rain scene, unbelievable acting - the lead female (who's name I can't even be bothered to look up) has one expression "surprised" throughout but never conveys any real sense of peril - but i guess she's a District Attorney and that's (according to this movie) just what they do.

The only saving grace of this movie is Robert Duvall who can turn any turkey of a script into gold - shame he's only got 10 lines.

Cruise isn't a bad actor but he's channeling Clint Eastwood most of the movie - Eastwood he ain't.

The bad guy is worthy of an Austin powers movie - absurd accent and motivations for being so damn evil - a clandestine attempt to build roads and bridges that aren't really needed?? This was the plan he hatched whilst in a Siberian prison whilst biting his own fingers off??

I feel sorry for Reacher fans - this movie has inadvertently made his loyal readers look like adults who Read Harry Potter novels.

  Flat and lifeless thriller.

I've never read any of the Lee Childs novels on which this film is based so while I was aware of some fan issues around the casting of Tom Cruise as the titular Jack Reacher my review is purely based on the film itself.

When a public shooting that kills five people seems to be an open and shut case for prosecutors who find their perpetrator quickly and conclusively they are surprised when under questioning the only thing he asks of them is to 'Get Jack Reacher'. But who is Jack Reacher? Turns out he's ex military and living off the grid but who already knows just where to turn up when wanted! So begins an investigation that soon makes everyone realise this case is far from open and shut...............

The main problem I found with the film was a surprisingly one dimensional performance (based on, in fairness, a thinly written character where depth is supposedly inferred from his extensive abilities and almost nothing else) from Tom Cruise and a plot that whil not especially complicated is nonetheless quite dull actually. In fact, dull is the best word to describe the film overall as it ambles in no particular hurry to a conclusion designed to set up a franchise for Cruise that might help him out when he becomes too old for Mission: Impossible. Except I don't think I'd be bothered if I never saw the character again on film.

Certainly, it did not do a lot for me.

  Good Tom Cruise Film

If you are a Tom Cruise fan this film is for you.
If you are a Jack Reacher fan it's not.
Tom Cruise is not, and never will be Jack Reacher.
As the saying goes Tom couldn't fill Jack's boots.
