The question 'where were you when you heard John Lennon was killed?' has been asked by millions of people all over the world since the legendary ex-Beatle and humanitarian was shot dead by Mark David Chapman on 8 December 1980.

Chapter 27 is first-time writer-director JP Schaefer's own version of the reasons behind the killing. An official selection at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, Chapter 27 stars Hollywood hot properties Jared Leto (Panic Room, Lord of War, Fight Club), who famously put on 67 pounds to play the part of Chapman, and Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls, Bobby), who shines as a hardcore Lennon fan.

Following the events leading up to the moment Chapman shot Lennon five times in the back after the singer had autographed an album cover for him. Chapter 27 is a play on JD Salinger's classic novel The Catcher in the Rye, which ends on chapter 26. Chapman related and modeled his life after the book's main character Holden Caulfield, and it was the book he held onto at the time he infamously shot John Lennon. Chapman claimed the book held the reasons behind the heinous act.

Portraying Chapman's mental collapse as his demons win over, Chapter 27 is shocking, thought-provoking and ultimately essential viewing for fans not only of the legendary musician, but anyone who want to know more about one of the twentieth century's most talked about events.

I personally don't understand the uproar this film has caused amongst John Lennon fans. I understand that they don't want Mark David Chapman to get the notoriety he craved at the time of the murder, but this film will do nothing but make Beatles/Lennon fans loathe that man even more.
A really well made film and as tastefully done as possible. Jared Leto is fantastic in his role and if you have seen any of his other films you will see how versatile he is as an actor.
The film portrays well Chapman's way of thinking and how deluded and unstable he really was and offers a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding John Lennon's death.
Obviously not a family film, but speaking as a big Beatles fan and a huge admirer of John Lennon, I think it is a must see for any like-minded people and that anyone willing to criticise before viewing it really should give it a chance first.

 Excellant - Must see!!!

Excellent film which gives a good insight to the mind of Mark Chapman and the events leading up to the dreadful day in New York. Jared Leto puts in a good performance. Just a shame the actor who plays John Lennon in the film, his name is Mark Chapman

 Very Good Film

Chapter 27 should be watched by any fan of Lennon, and anyone who is curious as to what could make a man murder someone so peace-loving as he was. Leto gives what is easily the finest and most demanding role of his career to date, and even Lyndsey Lohan's performance can be credited. At times the story can be a bit slow, but i guess there's only so much you can do with a murderer waiting three days to kill someone. Much much better than the god awful 'the assasination of john lennon' and should is a definate watch
