This classic mini-series in six episodes tells the story of Katrina, a young woman whose life is threatened by the deception of the man she loves. This is also the story of her estranged father Hal Stanton - a drunk, a fraud and a has-been lawyer hiding from a past which is to haunt him forever. When Katrina is falsely imprisoned for drug smuggling Hal becomes the only man who can save her.
Katrina believed that her father was dead. Only after the death of her mother does she discover the truth - her mother's parents discovered Hal's disgraceful war record and forced him to leave Australia.
Katrina's search for her father takes her to England where she finds his family and learns the details of her father's disgrace. Despite their disapproval Katrina is determined to find him. At the last minute her Uncle, impressed by her determination, gives her the address of a firm of lawyers in Bangkok who look after the Stanton family business and may know of Hal's whereabouts.
As Katrina plans her journey she falls under the spell of the devastatingly charming Arkie Regan who suggests they fly to Australia via Goa and gives Katrina a camera as a present so that she can record her trip. After an idyllic week together, Katrina persuades her new found love to accompany her to Bangkok to help find her father. The trip proves unsuccessful so the couple decide to return to Australia together.
At the airport Katrina's camera case is searched and to her horror 8 kilos of heroin are found and suddenly Arkie has disappeared without a trace. In the nightmare that follows Katrina swears she is innocent, but no-one will listen. She is imprisoned in the "Bangkok Hilton" a notorious prison where where she has to fight to survive whilst awaiting her trial. Katrina knows that if she is found guilty she will face execution.
Her only contact is her father's solicitor, and so Hal Stanton unbeknown to her finally meets his daughter and becomes her only hope for release. Touched by his daughter's courage and convinced of her innocence. Hal is determined to save her, and by doing so, perhaps himself. The legal battle is lost, and all seems hopeless until Hal, forced to face up to his own experiences of imprisonment and to recall the terrible memories he has tried for so long to suppress, comes up with a daring plan, Escape.

One of the best I have seen for a long time. Eversince I watched it on TV, I always wanted to own it. One is always on the edge. The execution scene by firing squad is brilliantly filmed. The film should be an essential viewing for all those who are thinking of dabbling in drugs.
Superb acting, photography, story, direction. One can't find any fault.

This is really excellent, you'll never want to visit Thailand after watching this...!!!
Seriously though, brilliant cast with an unspoiled Nicole Kidman & the legendary Denholm Elliott. Also Hugo Weaving takes a good part.
Highly recommended.

Saw this years ago, very good film. Aslo book by S. Gregory "forget you have a daughter" shows remarkable resemblance to the film, and shows how real it could possible be in the most imfamous prision in Thailand. Will have you on the edge of your seat. Bit too long to watch in one go, but you cant stop half way through.
