Alexandre Dumas' celebrated book 'The Count Of Monte Cristo' follows the adventures of Edmond Dantès (Gerard Depardieu), a 19th-century French version of James Bond, a rich, ruthless, and suave purveyor of homemade justice. This French production is extravagant, having the destinction of being the first filmed version of the newly restored unabridged version of Dumas' classic, which runs about 800 pages. The movie was filmed all over Europe and doesn't leave out any detail from the celebrated novel.

The film's story line is similar to the feature length movies shown in past years. What sets this film apart is the in-depth unfolding of Dante's plot coupled with the determination to exact revenge upon a sinister and unlikely bunch who had made their wealth and fortune from their betrayal of him.
I found the film captivating and couldn't dare switch off as every scene had to be followed carefully in order to appreciate the plot in its entirety. Depardieu is brilliant as the illusive Edmond Dante but my favourite character is his servant Bertuccio played by Sergio Rubini who will warm your heart as his character unfolds to reveal such a trusted and faithful companion. In my opinion no other film makers have come close to improving on this one.
