I have never read the comics so I couldn't judge this on how faithful it was to the original material but I have to admit I really enjoyed this. Don't get me wrong there is pretty much no originality here, as it borrows from many films, Blade Runner, Demolition Man and Superman 2 to name a few but it really doesn;t make much difference. Its one of those action films that knows its cheesy and doesn't really care. I find it hard that anybody wouldn't enjoy this film. Sit back, give your brain a break and ENJOY!

I throughly enjoyed This movie. Even though it is totally different from the comics. What you have to do is just forget that fact. If your a fan. If not the you have nothing to worry about just sit back and enjoy the ride. I'm a fan of the comics and I liked it so I'm sure other fans will even though it is very different!

I am an original 2000AD fan. When I was 8 years old my mum bought me the first ever issue, with free frisbee. Back then my favourite stories were "Flesh" and "Harlem Heroes".

Judge Dredd arrived in Prog 2, but in the early days he mainly had silly little one-prog episodes that were meant to parody modern 1970's life. He even had a landlady (Maria) and a pathetically annoying wobot (robot dammit) called Walter. I didn't pay him much heed.

Then came the robot wars, with Call-Me-Kenneth waging war on humankind. This was no oneoff story - it had a plot. Humans were abusing robots, robot rebelled, carnage ensued. The story lasted 26 weeks! And although it still featured Walter and Maria it was such a cosmic shift forward, that I could not wait for the next week's prog.

So while Flesh and Harlem Heroes eventually faded, Judge Dredd grew to be a legend.

I grew older, I didn't always read 2000AD, but I would return to it in my teenage years and via the monthly "The Best of 2000AD" and occasional trips to Forbidden Planet I managed to buy up most of the Judge Dredd story: The Judge Child Quest; Otto Sump; The Apocalypse War; Stookie Gland; City of the Damned; Block War; Judge Death etc.

Anyway, that has nothing to do with this film, it merely stands to establish my credentials. I love Judge Dredd and the whole Mega City One mentality.

Which is why I love this film. It genuinely tries to recreate in cinema something that has only ever existed on comic book pages. And it does it a decade before CGI meant that such things could be done without any human effort (Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man for Chrissakes).

So I personally rejoiced in this film and its doffing its cap to so many aspects of the 2000AD ethos; Chief Judge Fargo, plus Judges Griffin and MacGruder. Add Rico, Judge Hershey, The Long Walk, The Angel Gang (particularly Mean Machine Angel "I'm gonna go up to 4 on ya"). This film is a celebration of everything 2000AD.

I was 26 when Judge Dredd was released. It had already been panned by the press by the time I went to see it. But I loved it, it had The Cursed Earth, Block Wars and even Hammerstein from ABC Warriors. It was a visual feast of all things 2000AD. Let's not forget that 2000AD is a british comic and although Mega City One is set in America, there is a very british sense of humour running through this movie - I belive it was fimed over here.

And as for Stallone as Dredd. Well truthfully I was disappointed when I first heard he was casted. But the fact is that he pulls off the lantern-jawed-robotically-efficient-law-enforcer with aplomb. Sure I'd have liked him to keep his helmet on longer, maintain that Dredd mystique, but I accept that a] the plot and b] he's a multi-millionaire actor means that the visage is gonna feature in most of the story.

In conclusion, this film is now available for just £5. Buy it and enjoy it. That's what I'm gonna do.

In 1995 the film had 2000AD fans attacking it like rabid dogs. I used to read the exploits of Dredd in the comic as a kid, so after hearing the sacralidge the fan boys were screaming, I expected this to be pathetic. To be honest I really enjoyed it. The thing with the film is it was made way too early, and the Judge Dredd chatacter was never that popular with the U.S. market, so in a way this big budget extravaganza was cursed from day one. Stallone as Dredd is suprisingley good, and the square jaw jutting below the helmet realy does capture the essence of the comics. But then the helmet comes off and this turns out to be just a normal Stallone action movie. It's good to see that alot of the characters turn up in the film, but that also is a problem as what were major characters in the comics are killed off pretty quick, so they act alike camio's. The Megga city sky line is amazing, even out doing Blade Runner of it's future landscape. Also the creation of the War-Bot is outstanding. With all these good points it's hard to dislike the film.
But there is one massive stumbleing block and that come in the form of Rob Schneider this so called funny man irritates and becomes tiresome very early on in the film, I would have thought Sly would have learned his lesson having already starred with him in Demolition Man.
This film is not a classic comic book to film adaption by any means,
But if you try and forget about it's comic book origins, and take it as a Sci-Fi action film, it is still pretty entertaining.
Now in the Post Matrix world it's time they remade this cult character and gave the Judge some justice!

In a way this film was made 10 years too early before the era of "The Matrix" and the wonders of computer-generated special effects. However despite the mis-casting of Sly Stallone as Joe Dredd and the fact he wasn't able to keep his helmet on for longer than 5 minutes into the film, "Judge Dredd" is still a wonderous failure. The brief glimpses of Mega City One was beautifully shot and the makeup effects of the Angel Gang and especially Mean Machine were bang on.

There is such a rich tapestry of characters in the world of Judge Dredd and this film tried too hard to incorporate too much of it. The Joe Dredd / Rico Dredd saga should've been a story by itself. The Angel Gang should've been in a separate film. At least they didn't try to include Judge Death!

So to summarise ... a glorious failure. Why can't Hollywood remake this film rather than waste money on remaking classic films like "Dawn of the Dead" and "Halloween"? And for God's sake don't let Rob Schneider anywhere in the remake!

Recent years have seen a great deal of well-produced, successful adaptations of well-known comic book characters. Back in the mid-nineties when Judge Dredd was released things were oh so different. Not that Stallone was necessarily THE worst choice to play Dredd, just that with all his shouting 'I AM der law!' and the unforgivable decision for him to remove his helmet you can't help feeling that there's a much, much better film in here somewhere. Moderate effects fail to hide a film that totally fails to do justice to the classic 2000AD character. Must try harder...
