I am a MASSIVE LOTR FAN!! and I am also a MASSIVE FAN of this special edition!! It is amazing!! I love everythin about it! I adore the deleted scenes, I adore the commentaries, I adore the special features and the Easter Eggs! I cant forget the Easter Eggs!!
Lotr is really special to me and I was so excited when I found out that they were gonna make special editions of the films and they havent disappointed!!
I absolutely adore the commentaries! They are so interesting and hilarious!!! I espcially love the Cast Commentary, the way they all interact with eachother and talk over one another, its so funny! All the stories and anecdotes that they share with the audience listening is really cool! It gives u a greater insight into how they lived down in New Zealand while they were filming! Not only are they funny but some of the stories they explain bits of the tale in a different way, and gives u a greater understanding of the trilogy as a whole! Same with the other commentaries aswell!
As for the deleted scenes, how incredible are they, they bring even more depth to the story! I adore the Houses of Healing scene, as over the top you hear Arwen's Song, sung by the very lady who plays her, the gorgeous Liv Tyler, my absolute fave actress! What an amazing voice she has, a hidden asset! Also all the extended parts of how Aragorn, Lege and Gimli tried to recrut the army of the dead was great and the extra fight scenes of Eowyn, I was really pleased to see that, as Eowyn needed to show her inner strength like that, esp against the Witch King!! You Go Girl!! There are so many fab extended scenes, all of them are brill!! I would of liked to of seen the cut scene where we see what happens to Legolas and Gimli, but u cant win them all! *sigh*
Moving on to the special features........im afraid im running out of good words to use, lol, ive used most of them already.....this time im gonna say........Excellent!! I adore the documentary about the life of the horses and riders on set, being a horse lover myself I loved learning the real names for the horses who played the characters, for example, Shadowfax was played by 2 white stallions called Domero and Blanco and Brego was played by Ureaus (who Viggo now owns), to name a couple!
I cried at most of the other documentaries, such as at the bit where Elijah does his last scene and Peter Jackson hugs him and says thank you....we had to get the mop out I can tell u!
AND THE EASTER EGGS, o the Easter Eggs!! Hilarious again......'Do u wear wigs?????'.......'the dolphin is dead, died in a car accident!' LMAO!
I could go on forever talking about this dvd set, I promised I wouldnt be as long the next time I wrote about Lotr, I dnt think ive kept my promise somehow! O well, if u hav managed to get this far down my essay without drifting off to watch Deal Or No Deal, thank you for reading, lol!

     It a word "brilliant"

Extremely true to the books, the three Lord Of the Rings films are absolutely superb. Brilliant special effects, excellent casting, you just can't criticise any element of the films at all. The extended versions are well worth it. They don't just add in meaningless shots, they add in critical story elements that were omitted from the cinema versions to keep the films a reasonable length. The additions change the light the story is portrayed in, and while not absolutely essential, add real depth. They can not be recommended highly enough. The books tell a huge story and long films are needed to retell the story accurately. Immerse yourself into the extended versions and you will find it well worth it.

Not so much a trilogy as a legacy

Normally when i write a review, i have an unlimited amount of things to say, some good, some bad, and i can only hope my reviews are helpfull and i always like to hear peoples feedback...but where return of the king is concerned, i am speechless. The lord of the rings trilogy is a masterpiece in film making and they are my favorite 3 films ever made. Now all of my friends think i'm sad for all the stuff i know about lotr, but i dont care, i love 'em. I'll start with the tiny criticisms i have which are: a) Elijah Wood is in it and b) all of the films don't really follow the books, the general plot is captured but a lot of detail from the books is missed out in the film...but it doesn't matter, whereas the books can be a little hard to follow in places the film is clear cut and easy to understand. i honestly can't think of the words to put in this review and that is a first. the direction, acting, effects and over-all production is superb but pales in comparison to the script...it is flawless, no detail is missed out with refernce to the film (not the book) In conclusion the film is no replacment for the book but is a masterpiece of it own. any one who has or hasn't read the books should see this movie, in fact the only excuse for not seeing this is...is...actually, there isn't an excuse. watch it

Having just watched the entire extended editions culminating in this sublime epic...what can I say that hasn't already been said? This surely is fillm making of the highest calibre. Probably the greatest collection I'm ever likely to have the privilege of watching in my entire life. Utterly superb! Incredable vision, scope, wonderful performances from an amazing cast. This will live in my memory forever. A true masterclass of cinema & storytelling by a superlative Director, Peter Jackson, the true Lord of the Rings. I can only give this my highest possible recommendation!!!
