Far And Away (Dir. Ron Howard, 1992): Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in this critically acclaimed romantic adventure from director Ron Howard.

This breathtaking epic opens on the West Coast of Ireland, 1892. Joseph Donelly (Cruise), a poor tenant farmer, is determined to bring justice to an oppressive landlord. Instead, he finds himself accompanying the landlord's daughter, Shannon (Kidman), to America in a quest for land.

Arriving in Boston, Joseph finds a place for them to live while proving a natural at bare-fisted boxing. But his triumph is short-lived as he and Shannon are thrown out into the bitter cold. Joseph sets off for work on the railroad until a passing wagon train reminds him of his original goal to possess his own land. Preparing to stake his claim in the new territory, he runs into Shannon, who is unhappily reunited with her former fiancée. In the excitement of the Oklahoma land rush, they realise their dreams of land and life together.

Far and Away (1992) is an epic romantic adventure movie starring Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Prosky and Colm Meaney.

The plot revolves around Irish farmboy Joseph Donnelly (Cruise) who travels with rich girl Shannon Christie (Kidman) to America. There the two struggle to find work while falling in love.

Although both Cruise and Kidman struggle with Irish accents they do give good performances in this movie. Cruise in particular is very charismatic and at his most handsome peak. Colm Meaney steals every scene though.

Director Ron Howard (Apollo 13) does a terrific job with this movie. The bareknuckle fight scenes are exciting, the cinematography is beautiful (This was the last ever movie to be shot in the Super 65mm format) and the big action scenes amazingly realistic. Howard's direction is the real strength of this movie.

Far & Away is at times a little silly but its a very entertaining movie and certainly better then its reputation suggests. Its an old fashioned romantic adventure epic and its worth a look. Just try to ignore the silly Cruise/Kidman Irish accents.
