Frankie Boyle: Live At The Hackney Empire

As has been mentioned in other reviews, most of the material in this show has been on TV. It's partly my own fault as I really like Frankie Boyle and have viewed all of his YouTube stuff as well. However, you expect a comedian to wait until his live show has ended before using those jokes on TV, admittedly he has been touring for a year - but he must know which jokes the audience will have heard before. After all, he is a TV comedian, no one would have bought tickets not knowing what he was like. So, if by some miracle you haven't seen Frankie on TV then this could easily be 4 or 5 stars, but for me my face fell every time he started a routine I'd seen on Dave about ten times. Even some of the apparent mistakes he'd made on TV were repeated, so I was left feeling that although he's obviously a funny guy - there is something a little false about his stage presence. But if you're a fan, and not expecting an hour of new jokes then it is still worth buying - there are a few routines you won't have heard, essentially stuff that is obviously too dark for BBC2; and he at least tries to have a bit of banter with the audience. The extras may make this worthy of a purchase, but on balance if you want a good laugh this Christmas then you'll probably find Frank Skinner's new DVD will provide more "ha ha" and less "oh no, not again".

If you are a big fan of frankie on mock the week dont buy this!!!! 95% Of the gags on this live show has been used on mock the week before. Nouthing fresh. If u arent a fan of mock the week then by all means buy it. Its hilarious if u havent heard the material before.

Being a massive fan of Frankie from 'Mock the Week' I was really looking forward to settling back with a few beers and soaking up the scathing sceptisism that he has to offer in spadefuls.
The only thing is, and this is something that I wasn't anticipating at all, is that after about 45 minutes it really starts to become, well, depressing really.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a PC, tree hugger, lets everyone be polite kind of person, but I found myself at the end of the DVD feeling quite miserable.
Think I'll stick to 'Mock the Week' and keep Frankie's comedy in bite size chunks where, in my opinion at least, it's the funniest.

I am a HUGE comedy fan, and am often in hysterics at Mock The Week. Was really looking forward to having the DVD delivered, and played it at the first given opportunity (as soon as wee one was in bed!).

Don't get me wrong, it IS funny! Very, very dry, you must be warned of this! I am a very open minded person, and there were points where I was thinking 'OUCH!'! Very, very funny, though.

But! Most of the jokes I remembered from different Mock The Week episodes. I'm sure he will have gone on tour before the filming of the latest series of the program, but it gets a bit long when you feel as though you know what's coming next, despite never having seen the DVD before.

Frankie Boyle Live is, in my opinion, on par with Lee Mack Live, and Jimmy Carr Live, with the repeated gags from TV and the non stop one liners.

I would recommend Dara O'Briain's 2 DVD's, Lee Evans's 8 DVD's, Michael McIntyre and Alan Carr's DVD's, as these have more relateable gags, longer, personalised storyline gags that can be followed much easier....

I went to see Frankie in Newcastle last week & was really disappointed with his performance. If your a fan of Mock the Week I would advise against buying this & just get the Best Of Mock The Week DVD. About 95% of Frankies Stand-Up jokes were from Mock the Week & although funny they are fairly timid if you have heard them already while watching the show
