Ridley Scott delivers another fantastic film with his insight into the life of an american gangster - Frank Carter. Based on a true story, Ridley really portrays the gritiness of America in the 60's & 70's really well, with a great soundtrack and excellent cinematography. Kept me interested all the way through despite the 2hr 30mins running time with plenty of action and a quality plot. Not quite a goodfellas or a scarface but will always have a definate spot on my DVD shelf!
Good Film

Having heard that this was a very good film, I watched expecting a cracker. Whilst it didn't blow my head off, it was well worth a watch although I did predict the outcome after about half an hour. But don't let that put you off, its well worth the money and a good addition to your DVD collection.
A very enjoyable watch, and an insight into Gangster life.

I very much enjoyed watching American Gangster, as the world in which Frank Lucas has created is very intriguing. With some excellent performances from Denzel and Russel Crowe, you'll find even though it may be a heavy film at times, its pretty easy to watch.
Although it is long (2 hours 30 mins), it manages to achieve a solid plot and a good ending, tied together with an insight into 60s and 70s corruption and the war on drugs.
8/10
Spectacular, absolutely spectacular. There are not many films out there about which I can say this. However this one deserves nothing less. Everything is perfect. I don't think there could have been more suitable actors for the roles. Denzel is brutal and greedy, and at the same time elegant. Out of all the black actors out there, he is the only one who could play such a role flawlessly. Crowe played the good guy, the tough, honest cop who put his job above everything else, who did what he believed what right despite all the corruption around him. Characters like him have been in hundreds of movies before it, nevertheless his character is very distinct and original.
Good but not Great

I liked this for the fact that it is based on a true story. I do think that Washington has had a lot better films than this but it was dissapointing. I brought this as it was recommended to me but fell short of what i was expecting but still it was alright
Good

A solid thriller, with a fantastic performance by Washington. As good as Man on Fire. Don't watch this expecting the same as Goodfellas though. This is more of a thinking man's film.
Oh, a previous reviewer said that organised crime was "invented" by the mafia- i'd just like to point out that in fact "organised crime" has existed since ancient times, and that the mafia are only a product of this- Sicilian figureheads were earning money through crime thousands of years ago, along with many other organised criminals in many other cultures worldwide.
Crazy.

I honestly cant believe people are leaving bad reviews about this film!! I got it as soon as it came out on DVD and thought it was a top film. It doesn't rate as an 18 I will agree, but this certainly should be up with other top gangster films. Make up your own minds!!!

a real gangster film should be about la cosa nostra. the italian mafia. this is where the gangster life originated and films like this and scarface are not really gangster just drug dealer films. that being said it doesnt make them bad just not true to their given genre. this movie was well acted, well scripted and well directed but just didnt have that something special. a good film, worth a watch but not in the same league as scarface or carlitos way.

the potential for this film to be up there alongside goodfellas, scarface and carlitos way was there but what you get is a very boring and very dull film that moves along at snails pace and for having an 18 cert very little violence,im not a big fan of ridley scotts work and find him overrated as a director maybe in the hands of scorcese or depalma this would have worked, sadly its a big disapointment.if you like crime thrillers check out we own the night released around the same time its an underated gem and deserves to find a bigger audience on dvd.
