Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982)£5.99 Free DeliveryIn stock | Usually dispatched within 24 hours |
Times are hard in 1846 London and one must make do. So Nellie Lovett adds something extra to the meat pies she peddles on Fleet Street. The secret ingredient: freshly murdered victims of her partner in crime, barber Sweeney Todd.
Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. The score coils around itself in ever-tightening spirals. The lines ripple with black humor and madness. Enter Sweeney's tonsorial parlor. Attend the tale.

This is the original production which inspired Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd and It's actually very good!! Not that I am surprised with the amount of Tony's it achieved.
If you have seen Mr Burton's version first, then you may be suprised to find quite a few scenes and song which never appeared in the recent film version.
The portrayals of the two main characters may not me as realistic as the new version but the whole show seems to take on a different edge, as if all the characters are haunting the theatre again and again. This version Of Mr Todd and Mrs Lovett are almost characatures of the original characters, which is why it does not seem as dark as the newer version, but this changes when the cast turn into the chorus.
Has to be seen!! and there are some very unique sections which will inspire you.
Superb Sweeney.

No it is not just another Sweeney Todd. Not to be compared to the Johnny Depp film see it in its own right. As any stage musical is not a film so this fantastic musical is a theatre experience.
To watch is to appreciate why it was awarded 8 Tonys.
Hal Prince directing and Sondheims brilliant music and incredible use of words is a great start. Add to this outstanding performances by all of the cast and Angela Lansbury and George Hearn truly unbelievable. What a joy to hear every word without straining your hearing Well done.If you don`t have a Stage Musical in your collection buy this you can`t go wrong.
