This film from acclaimed documentary filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky provides a fascinating portrait of the most successful heavy metal band of all time, as they faced monumental personal and professional challenges while recording their first studio album of original songs in five years.
The film is an intensely intimate look at one of the biggest rock bands of all time - the band have sold over 90 million albums worldwide. 'Metallica - Some Kind of Monster' takes you inside the studio and into the psyches of Metallica, as they record their Grammy-winning album 'St. Anger'. Over the course of two and a half years, the band - James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo - battle their way through communication breakdowns, addictions, a band member's defection, fatherhood, domestic chaos and near-total disintegration during the most turbulent period of their 20-year history.
In the tradition of such seminal music documentaries as "Don't Look Back" and "Gimme Shelter," this seeks to transcend the conventions of the "rock 'n' roll movie" genre, trading rock-star posing for truthful introspection and revealing an intimate portrait of the individuals behind a legendary band.
'Trying to whittle down over 1600 hours of footage into a feature-length movie was an often heartbreaking task. We are thrilled that as part of the extensive special features on this 2-disc set, we were able to resurrect some of our favourite scenes that were so difficult to leave on the cutting room floor.' - Filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Joe Sinofsky.

By the end, you wish you could just have a big fat group hug with Metallica and say to them 'I love you guys'
Since seeing this documentary my appreciation for Metallica has grown and I never thought I could feel such great respect for people who I've never actually met. I was overwhelmed by this film and felt sad, happy, sympathetic, then crying sad...basically it's pretty deep.
The Special Features are loaded (on disc 2) and equally entertaining as the feature.
A Great Insight to the band.

This is a great documentary, very interesting to watch how they made St. Anger., and what happend during the recording of St. Anger. The band gets a therapist to solve issues within the band, Lars sueing Napster, the fights James and lars have while kirk is telling 'em there's no point in fighting, and it shows when Lars and Dave Mustaine( Lead singer of Megadeth) meet to talk about past issues. Metallica fans deffinetly should buy this if they hate st. anger still after watching this documentary you'll hink differently about the album. In my opinion i thought st. anger was an awesome album. Metallica fans this is a must have.
Revolutionary

Only when seeing this do you see the true insides of metallica. From the hatrid between lars and james through to the slightly wimpy "can't we all just get along" moanings of kurt. Either way this shows the whole saga of the making of their "back to their roots" album and is truely mind blowing. If you like metallica or just like good music in general this is a must watch!!
