The Ghost Breakers;

Mary Carter (Paulette Goddard - Cat and the Canary) inherits her family's ancestral home, located on a small island off Cuba, and, despite numerous warnings and death threats, she decides to take possession of the reputedly haunted castle.

She is joined by radio broadcaster Larry Lawrence Lawrence (Bob Hope) who believes to have killed a mobster, thus attending to flee to New York with his butler, Alex.

With assistance from Miss Carter, Lawrence soon defects from his original plan for a more spooky vacation on Black Island where all three enter an eerie castle as murder and mystery confronts them in this epic of a film.

As well as fighting off a menacing zombie, seeing a ghost of Mary's ancestor and finding the key to the castle's treasure, they're discovery is soon interrupted by the sudden appearance of the guilty party who's warnings to this point, had failed.

Strong performances from Paulette Goddard, Bob Hope, and Richard Carlson contribute to yet another masterpiece of a film.

The Cat and the Canary;

A will is read, 10 years after the death of eccentric millionaire, Cyrus Canby Norman where all the remaining relatives gather to hear who is to become the sole heir of the Cyrus Fortune.

Due to the streak of insanity in the family, a second will is derived stating that should the heir suffer death within a month of inheriting, the fortune would be passed to the person in the 'never to be opened' second envelope. Good motive for Murder eh?

Following this, Hendricks, a prison guard, warns the household that a homicidal maniac, who inmates call "The Cat", has escaped from the local asylum and is hiding within the bayou. This sets up Cyrus' relatives, who have no way of leaving until the boat arrives the following day, a night filled with murder, mystery and intrigue.

This is by far one of the best murder mysteries made in the thirties.

10/10 film quality; 7/10 picture quality.

 Disapointing picture quality

The Cat and the Canary is an absolute gem of a film.
Very atmospheric with good performances all round, and of course, Bob Hope shines.
My main big grudge is the picture quality. It looks like a bad dupe of a VHS transferred to DVD. If this were re-issued as a remaster I would definately buy it.
The Ghost Breakers is nothing like as good a film, yet the print quality is quite good.
