Smart People stars Dennis Quaid as Professor Lawrence Wetherhold - an imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed intellectual giant. However when it comes to solving problems relating to love and family, he's completely lost!
His teenaged daughter (Ellen Page) is an acid-tongued overachiever who follows in her father's misery-loving footsteps, whilst his adopted brother (Thomas Haden Church) has perfected the art of freeloading. When his brother shows up unexpectedly for an extended stay at just about the same time as he accidentally encounters his former student Janet (Sarah Jessica Parker), the circumstances cause him to stir from his deep, deep freeze, with often comical, sometimes heartbreaking, consequences for himself and everyone around him.

Not bad but not that good either...

I recently watched this on a region 1 dvd.Although this was well acted by all concerned it just failed as a movie to go anywhere.Story concerns a school teacher in his fifties (Quad) who lacks motivation after the death of his wife.He then finds love again (Parker) much to the resentment of his over achiever daughter. This is basicly a condensed tv soap drama but has very little in the way of wit and charm.I would strongly recommend renting this as even though this is one to watch on a wet afternoon, it is not one to go back too.

Dennis Quaid played a different type of character in this movie than those you normally see him play. He did a great job in this role as a very anal and inapproachable widowed professor. His daughter, who seems to be following in daddy's footsteps (Ellen Page) did a fantastic job as well. Rounding out the dysfunctional family is the estranged adopted brother: Thomas Haden Church. Story far too stretched getting annoying most of the times. Boring movie.

'dennis quaid' plays 'lawrence wetherhold' who lost his wife some while back, he works at a college as a lecturer and is totally engrosed in his work...until he meets up with an ex-student played by 'sarah jessica parker' who, when a student had a crush on the professor.
'lawrence' is badly out of practice in the relashonship stakes.
his 'needs to get a life' daughter played by 'juno's' 'ellen page' clearly dosn't want anyone to take her mum's place, and displays her objection quite openly.
with a spongeing brother also in tow the household is dysfunctional.
the film does have it's moments of humour,but.... it might not be enough to hold your interest, may want to hire it before you buy it.
