The Diving Bell And The Butterfly tells the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby - the editor of the fashion magazine 'Elle France,' who at the age of 43 suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body, except his left eye.

Using his eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories from lands he'd only visited in his mind.

A truly Uplifting and inspiring Story.
Makes you appreciate all the things we take for granted, and encourages you to use all you have for those around you.
But at the same time delivers a message of hope, despite how dire ones circumstances may become.
The film is not over the top and is told with a gentle flair and some nicely timed comic moments. Especially some of the Narration from the Protaganist.
You really do have to watch this, and discover there is so much more stories for us to see and hear from this big wide world.
The Direction, Acting and Cinematography is Top Rate.

 Surprisingly Uplifting

I had read positive reviews about this film so decided to go against my instincts and watch it. I am glad I did as this is a thoroughly well made film that is surprisingly uplifting considering its story. At time fun, at times sad, at times dramatic, at times moving this is ultimately an exceptional piece of cinema. Well directed, if slightly lacking visual flair at times (imagine the fantasy sequences if Terry Gilliam or the like had been director), beautifully acted and very well written.

 Surprising how good this is

This is a film based on the true story where the editor of Elle suffers a stroke, gets 'locked in' syndrome', where he can only blink one eye, and uses this to write his memoirs. This subject matter makes you wonder how an enthralling film can be made from this.
But it does. This is a often funny, often moving film shot from the point of view of Jean-Dominique.
What makes this film so good is it doesn't rely on your sympathy for Jean-Dominique and shows him as very normal human being in terms as often not being likeable.
I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

Having read the book I ordered this as soon as I found it. This is one of the most inspiring stories ever told.

"Had I been blind and deaf, or does it take the glare of disater to show a person's true nature?" - Jean-Dominique Bauby

Certain parts within this film will make you feel so sorry for John Do and then others will make you feel so happy. Do not be put off because its in French and don't dubb it with the English take in the full impact with the French version. Beautiful language.

A truly amazing and uplifting story. I was unable to put it down. It grasped me from page one. What a remarkable man Jean-Dominique Bauby was!
