CANTONATHEKING like a lot of people probably went to see this movie in the pictures because Brad Pitt was in it and without reading any of the background on the film.

This is not a flash bang Mr & Mrs Smith but nor is it a Seven or Fight Club. It probably shares more in common with Clint Eastwoods Unforgiven than any other film I can think of.

It is a long movie and a very slow burner at that but it is very well acted, very well shot and very bl00dy good. Pitt brings just enough menace to the surface in his portrayal of Jesse James that you know he is a powerful and dangerous man.

There are long periods in the film where not much happens but the tension between all the characters is palpable, and the strains of their relationships with each other keeps this movie flowing.

This movie is puntuated by moments of action but the main story narrative and characterisation is why should watch this movie.

As I said earlier - do not be expecting a Brad Pitt big hitting movie, which is the mistake I think a lot of people made at the cinema. However, if you like films like Unforgiven then give this a shot. At least on DVD you can pause it if you need to wee.

Not boring or too long, but simply outstanding!

Attention spans and aesthetics will be tested with this modern cinema masterpiece, and it appears that some of the reviewers out there who slam this epic as 'boring' and 'too long' have neither. This is not an action film and has never claimed to be one. Just because it is set in 19th century American West doesn't mean to say that guns should be blazing all the time. Life was slow back then and this film shows it beautifully.
The writing, acting, direction, cinematography and the soundtrack make this film an example of how films 'should' be made.

 The Best Film of 2007

I loved Control and I thought Into The Wild was extraordinary but I have no hesitation whatsoever in saying that Jesse James is the film of the year.

Its hard to know which amazing aspect of this film to mention first. Ok, so the cinematography is a dazzling amalgamation of epic beauty and harsh, cold hostility.

The script is literate, visceral and gives the actors enough room to breath without ever straying to far from the core of the story, which itself is skilfully and painstakingly told with delicate charm and wit, intermingled with scenes of violence and debauchery.

The director, Andrew Domink has captured a moment in history that has been mythologized in American popular culture, and redefined it. This film is a place where realism and romanticism can sit side by side without fear of contradiction.

The entire supporting cast performs admirably; but its the two central performances that really capture the eye. Casey Affleck and Brad Pitt are Oscar worthy for this work. Affleck is great as the borderline psychotic, homo-erotic, nave young man who becomes equally obsessed and disillusioned with Brad Pitts charismatic and chilling, Jesse James, who has more than a hint of the supernatural about him.

Its easy to enjoy this film on many levels; technically its wonderful. The story is thoroughly entertaining and there is a visual and literary commentary on mythologized history and the nature of celebrity throughout.

Also the instantly classic soundtrack adds a thick layer of atmosphere to proceedings.

Its hard to find a weak spot, perhaps the film lingers a little too long after the key moment, but probably not. Overall, The Assassination of Jesse James is arguably the best western ever made, for my money it is, but others will disagree. But there is no doubt that this film sits comfortably in the upper echelons of the genre, alongside the likes of Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch and The Searchers.

 Astoundingly lyrical and beautiful Western

Yes, while the film is quite slow, it's worth it for the tense build-up between Ford and Jesse James. It's one of the deepest character studies in recent cinema, and the closing section of the film is a poignant look at our obsession with celebrity. I'm counting the days until I can nab this Special Edition DVD

This film is compelling from beginning to end, capturing your attention with beautiful cinematography and continuing to hold it with poetic voiceover work and music that remains with you long after the film has ended.

People dismiss Brad Pitt because he's a huge star and a Hollywood heart throb. However, it is his roles in films like this, Fight Club and Burn After Reading that prove he's miles ahead of many of his contemporaries. At the same time, Sam Rockwell is on top form as usual whilst Casey Affleck proves that he's an utterly convincing and talented actor.

This two disc set has a lot to offer, with some good features. However, it is the film that we are all paying to see and with Andrew Dominik offering us some truly iconic moments, Nick Cave providing a moving score to frame the movie and top class performances all round, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a must see.
