Regarded by his neighbours as a harmless misfit, Josie has spent all his adult life as the caretaker of a crumbling petrol station on the outskirts of a small town in the mid-west of Ireland. He is limited, lonely, yet relentlessly optimistic and, in his own peculiar way, happy. Garage is the story of Josie's hapless search for intimacy over the course of a summer, which sees his life changed forever. A landmark in Irish cinema, Garage is a beautifully portrayed cinematic drama interspersed with razor sharp shards of black humour, with acutely observed characters that leaves a lasting impression.
Garage is the second film from director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Mark O'Halloran, the team behind the award-winning black comedy Adam & Paul.

Not a great deal happens in this gentle Irish character study but that's the mainly the point. Focussing on the inert life of a slightly simple garage attendant in rural Ireland, the film boasts an extraordinarily convincing turn from Shortt in the lead, while cinematographer Peter Robertson manages to capture some wonderful imagery out of some very bleak and shabby locations. The film's gentle drift into tragic waters is not too jarring but you come away feeling as empty as the lives depicted.
Fully deserving of all the praise it gets

An outstanding acting performance from Shortt helps make this good film a great film. One of those that lives for months (and maybe even years) after watching it.
Superb film that stays with one for a long time
