This 3-disc set features the original pilot episode and following two episodes that make up the first dramatic series of George Gently.

The year is 1964. Inspector George Gently is known for his relentless pursuit of notorious gangsters in London - as well as the crooked cops that cover their tracks. But when his wife is murdered, deciding that he's got one case left in him, Gently heads up to Northumberland to solve it, and then decides to stay. Supported by young Detective Sergeant Bacchus, Gently is about to discover a whole new world of murder and intrigue in 1960s Britain; a place where everything is about to change, but the past is always present.

Episode 1 (Pilot): The death of a young biker brings Gently up North to confront Joe Webster (Philip Davis) the man behind his wife's murder.

Episode 2: The Burning Man: The torched corpse of an IRA sniper is of more interest to the Special Branch than it should be, and Gently needs to find out why.

Episode 3: Bomber's Moon: A German businessman who owes much to the community is found beaten and drowned. But whose debt can only be repaid by murder?

George Gently is a gem of a detective series - and easily the best detective drama the BBC has put out since Life On Mars.
The chemistry Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby share is wholly believable and completely engrossing, as a crime fighting duo in the North East of England who share a father/son-type relationship that neither of them cares to admit. The characters are complex (as most TV detectives are) and this only adds to the series.
It is set in the 1960s, and gives a wonderful snapshot of good old fashioned values and successful (if a little unorthodox) policing. George Gently is something of a Gene Hunt character - although a little less violent and alot more polite. And John Bacchus is his ambitious partner; keen to prove his worth in the force whilst learning new things every day.
There are also some brilliant appearances from such as Phil Davis and Richard Armitage.
A wonderfully written and acted series which deserves to be held up alongside the likes of Life On Mars, A Touch of Frost, Cracker...and, dare i say it, The Sweeney!

 Gently Does It.

I saw this by chance on T.V. and was hooked. I have always been a fan of Martin Shaw. The program set in the sixties is a masterpiece by the B.B.C. of course. A brilliant series. In the same class as Foyles War / Frost to name just two. A joy to watch. Ah the good old days.

 Love it

By far the best detective series on TV at the moment. Martin Shaw is perfectly cast as George Gently as is Lee Ingleby as Sgt Bachus. Great supporting cast and well written scripts. Only hope series 2 is released on DVD soon.
