Along with Robocop, which is very much from the same stable, the mock news bulletins and federation propaganda that appear throughout the Starship Troopers trilogy were always supposed to be an intentionally cheesy critique of the way TV news and media are heading - an exaggerated caricature, if you like, of what is in store for us?The cheese has always fed through into the storylines of the three movies, but perhaps more so in this third installment. But again, this is far from a haphazard accident. It is all very much tongue-in-cheek, and not intended to be taken too seriously - which I think some reviewers are doing. What they need to do is go back and watch the first movie, take off the rose tinted spectacles before doing so, and they will soon see that the apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree.Elsewhere, the lack of budget is more than noticeable - but the effects are competent within the confines of said budget. The cast also do a very competent job, and Casper Van Dien's Johnny Rico brings more than sentimentality to the movie - his appearance makes the overall feel of the film very much a return to form. Well, almost. As at the end of the day, I cannot put my hand on heart and say it is as good as the original. But in parts it is, especially so in the action and bug bashing stakes - so expect swarm upon swarm of green oozing bugs waiting to die, as well as the red oozing "citizens" of the federation. But that's OK, they never wanted to "live forever" anyway. "Do you want to know more?"...as the line from the movie goes. If so, buy the DVD - you won't regret it. Just take it for what it is....and enjoy the ride.
