In The Day The Earth Stood Still, a remake of the classic 1951 science-fiction film, Keanu Reeves stars as Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot, Gort, and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by a species watching from afar.

This classic tale of man's arrogance, updating Cold War themes of nuclear warfare and incorporating current issues of environmental destruction, has been a massive influence on modern cinema. This faithful remake stays true to its roots and delivers a sobering message with no little excitement, suspense and drama.

This is not a bad remake, far from it!
I was expecting to hate the film, as The original 1951 still is a classic. To be honest I was surprised with it's thoughtful script, even Keanu Reeves is good as the visitor. The effects are very impressive, and the film is always interesting. Although this film is well timed due to the scary turn in world events. The message seems more confused than in the original. Maybe that's the point, as there seems to be no clear destinction between who is the good guys and who is the true enemy in todays world.
Don't expect this movie to change the world, just expect a good thoughtful sci-fi, that will never be hailed as a classic, but should be known as a competent remake.

This is one of the best sci-fi films ever made, a delight to watch from start to end, the story is brilliant and kept the same as the original, the characters are the same, keanu reeves and jennifer connelly are amazing to watch, the robot gort is such an epic character too, the amazing special effects that have been created also on top of everything else make this film one big visual treat. The remake is a new classic i say, worth the buy.

 worth the wait?

The great thing about the classic original was the overall feeling of how small and chilfdlike the human race is and how the earth was warned to fit in with the other planets or face destruction.. Keanu is perfectly cast, Gort was impressive, but more should have been made of him.. And the worst part.. The ending! The films ending should have been as the original! after all it was the whole point of the film! our final warning to adapt, or face destruction!! The whole film, spoilt by its ending..

THE DAY I SAT STILL AND WATCHED A VERY GOOD REMAKE

There is a saying that sequels are never as good as the original and this has been proven on more than one occasion, there is also a saying that remakes are never as good as the original, and while I agree for most films - I don't for this!! The remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still could very well be a sequel (and if so a bloody good one) or a separate film using a simular idea, as the plot is very different from that of the original, the special effects are bigger and the story takes an environmental edge which is more than relevant in this day and age, and beggared the question, what if there was an alien race out there that wanted to cleanse the earth? It is also good to see that writer David Scarpa has added new elements of his own to this remake to make it different from the 1951 movie, for example; there's the massive 'Orb' spaceship as opposed to the conventional flying saucer from the original, there's the type that's not related to war like the first one and there's also a bigger and more powerful Gort. Keanu Reeves is rightly cast as Klaatu (the alien) as he has that sort of look about him and has the perfect monotone voice for the role - he has come a very long way since Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, while Jennifer Connelly is perfect as the stepmother who is trying to do her job, protect her stepson and help save the world - the final few scenes were very good. On the whole I don't think I have ever sat through a remake that I have been satisfied by, infact most remakes I will watch once and then forget about it or just not bother to see it again, this however; is on a par with the original film and is also very unique in the way the producers and writers take this version of the story - a definite watch and one of the better films of 2008.
