My daughter loves films and has gone on about seeing Coraline for ages, so we decided to buy it on DVD.
With all fairness i thought the film was good I enjoyed it and so did my daughter while she was watching it, she asked lots of questions afterwards and we explained it wasn't real. HOWEVER for the past 5 nights she has woken up shouting out asking things like: "will i wake up in the morning with buttons in my eyes."
All I would say is I don't think this is a film aimed at young children with over-active imaginations (like most kids have anyway)! The film is scary in a way and I can understand why it is now in her head everytime she goes to bed.
My daughter loved it but I think it is quite scary for young children. An exciting film even for adults. However, I would recommend the movie for children aged 9 and above.
I am not a child and I am not a concerned parent. Issues with the classification of the film should be taken up with the BBFC. I'm glad they allowed the film through as a PG though as the film would have had to be cut otherwise.
Simply, the charm of this film alone would be enough for me to give it 4 starts. The soundrack is excellent, the story clever and the characters interesting. Other reviewers have picked out the similarities between Nightmare Before Christmas. I think it is much better (entertainment without resorting to song).
I know the target audience, but to be honest I think this film is wasted on kids anyway. There's a whole lot more subcontext going on here than in a Michael Bay film which attracts droves of us 'Adults.'
This film is utterly amazing.
That's all there is to say about it.
I always thought Henry Selick's style since his collaboration with Burton on Nightmare before Christmas kinda lacked invention or that quirkiness that makes Nightmare before Christmas probably the best kids film ever...I was mistaken.
This film is utterly ingenious .
It's the style, the story, just the general feel of the film that makes it an absolute pleasure to watch.
Neil Gaiman's story is superb, suitably fitting with many of his other novels/graphic novels (especially the Doll House ones) and Henry Selick has truly come along way since James and The Giant Peach.
It's got laughs, scares, music, fun...anything a big kid (I'm 24) like myself wants from a film like this.
I watched it a few days later with my fiance's 3 year old nephew and he was completely engrossed from start to finish (even if some of the bits towards the end with the other mother scared him a little), which just shows the age's that this film speaks to.
I just hope we get some special DVD with loads of features etc. (Nudge Nudge Wink Wink Play.com)
