The human whose name is written in this note shall die...

Death Note is a live action Japanese film which is based on the hit supernatural action mystery manga comic of the same name.

Death Note follows the manga story of Light Yagami, a brilliant but bored high student with great prospects. Life changes dramatically for Light when he finds the Death Note, a notebook dropped by a rogue Shinigami death god named Ryuk...

Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies. Light sees an opportunity to rid the world of evil using the powers granted in the Death Note. Police call in the help of the famous, but unconventional detective L when criminals begin to mysteriously die. So begins the battle of wits to see who really is good or evil.

Wonderful film - I can't believe the book offer

I have just seen this at the ICA in London. It's the live-action version of the TV anime series, DEATH NOTE. They are both relatively similar, though the plot lines have been moved around a bit and a girlfriend was created for the main character, Light. In the anime and manga, there was no girlfriend and so my purist daughter complained loudly when she appeared in the film. However, I advise you to relax and give the film a chance--I actually LOVED what they did with the lady in the film. Early on, she's about as superfluous as a vestigial tail, but later she becomes an important part of the plot--you'll see. But as for the rest of the film, it is true to the original--Light is an evil piggie and L looks and acts much like a cockroach (like in the anime).

As for the story itself, it's a pretty hard film to describe for Western audiences. If you are already an anime/manga freak, then you probably will not be scared away by the odd plot line and story elements about the supernatural. However, for the uninitiated, please try to suspend judgment--the film can be enjoyed by anyone--not just anime/manga fans. I am much more of a casual fan of the genre and enjoyed the film immensely. My wife generally hates anime and loved the film. And, my insane "sold my soul to anime" teen loved the film as well. In light of this, I really think this live-action film is good entertainment for all and I can hardly wait to see the sequel that according to many is even better then the original. It is said that the sequel ends differently then the Manga version and that it is surprising and shocking all together. Believe me "Death Note" will really become a classic!!

 Quite a Collection

Though I have the Death Note movie, I cannot turn down such an amazing collection of pieces. This is a wonderful movie but really can only be enjoyed if you know the basic plot to begin with, otherwise it might feel unexplained in places. The casting is well done, especially with a difficult character such as L and although Ryuk does look campy this wasn't a high budget movie and so on that basis they created a great piece of film-making.

This is certainly one for fans of the anime, and if you haven't seen the anime or read the manga, you might find yourself seeking them out. The second film, whenever that comes out, will round up the story better as you may feel the end in this one is too sudden.

 Fantastic

As a fan of the manga I was worried it wouldnt live up to my expectations, but although it did change the story slightly I still enjoyed it just as much as the manga itself.

Tatsuya Fujiwara takes an amazing part as Light aswell, he captured the character very well

Live action Anime adaptations are a bad idea.......

Which is why I put off watching this for so long... I can't believe how wrong I was in this instance. I eventually gave in after watching Battle Royale II and realising that Tatsuya Fujiwara who played one of the leads was the same fella who played Light in Death Note.. So I gave it a go and I am so glad I did. This is obviously not quite as in depth as the anime but still an amazing experience!! There are more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing and you can't help but empathise with Light. Never before has there been a character I have both loved and hated in equal proportions. The casting choice for "L" was, like the character, GENIUS! and Erika Toda pulled off Misa Amane perfectly. Whether you are a fan of the original anime or not, I would highly recommend these movies.
