When Brian Clough died in the autumn of 2004 at the age of 69, the world of football mourned one of the greatest managers of all time.

The fans of Derby County lost a man who left an indelible mark on the football club he transformed into League Champions and his passing also had a major impact on the people of a city he called home. Cloughie charmed, cajoled and captivated Derby City and its supporters, dragging the club he joined in the summer of 1967 out of the doldrums of Second Division oblivion. By 1972 they were Division One Champions and feared opponents in European competition but an acrimonious split with the Derby board in 1973 saw Clough and his talismanic assistant Peter Taylor head for even bigger honours elsewhere.

In this film, recorded as he received the Freedom Of The City Of Derby award in May 2003, Clough says being the manager of Derby was "the best job I ever had". See too an emotional final tour of the scene of many of his Derby triumphs, the now demolished Baseball Ground, plus extracts from a memorial service for the great man at Derby County's new home, Pride Park Stadium, in October 2004.
