When I went to see this film at the cinema, I was both excited and also a wee bit nervous - both emotions stemming from my love of the Original Michael Caine version, which is nothing short of Brilliant and also his performance in it !! .... I so hoped that this would not turn out to be, yet another pointless and terrible remake of a Classic movie !! ....Gladly, afterwards I was able to give a sigh of relief, as this turned out not to be the case !! .... I thought it was pretty good actually. The film is updated in various ways ( Change of Locale from London to New York, quite logical really & also Alfie's Illicit affair with his friend's wife/girlfriend, suitably adapted to cater to today's tastes, or whatever you want to call it .... ) Jude Law is a quite likeable chap and his 'Cheeky Cockney' - type persona comes across well in the film, as of course his performance is actually pivotal to the story, in that the whole thing basically revolves around him. I felt that the spirit of the original is retained, without actually copying it, too much ( one could almost say that it retains the spirit of a '60's film - in some ways .... ) Anyway as I say, I thought that it was quite well done and I certainly would not be ashamed if I could turn out a pretty decent remake of a Classic movie like this one .... Of course the danger of being disappointed when going to see remakes of your favourite movies or TV shows is great these days .... Many filmakers when they choose to remake something that they themselves like, often either forget or are simply unable to reproduce that magical 'X ingredient' that exists in the original .... Either that or they think they have a great idea to change everything about the original that makes it what it is, and then, it is not that anymore !! .... well I think you get what I'm trying to put across .... The film is actually well made, yes and 'slick' too & moves along at a zippy pace .... Once again I would have no hesitation in recommending this version to fans of the original, with an open mind, of course, as to it's merits ....
