The Three Musketeers: The young D'Artagnan (Michael York) arrives in Paris with dreams of becoming a king's musketeer. He meets and quarrels with three men, Athos (Oliver Reed), Porthos (Frank Finlay), and Aramis (Richard Chamberlain), each of whom challenges him to a duel. D'Artagnan finds out that they are musketeers and is invited to join them in their efforts to oppose Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston) who wishes to increase his already considerable power over the king. D'Artagnan must also juggle affairs with the charming Constance Bonancieux (Raquel Welch) and the passionate Milady De Winter (Faye Dunaway), a secret agent for the cardinal. The adventure continues in the 'Four Musketeers'...
The Four Musketeers: D'Artagnan (Michael York) has become a Musketeer. Protestants hold La Rochelle, and the Queen loves Buckingham, who'll soon send ships to support the rebels. Richelieu enlists Rochefort (Christopher Lee) to kidnap Constance (Raquel Welch), the Queen's go-between and D'Artagnan's love. The Cardinal (Charlton Heston) uses the wily, amoral Milady de Winter (Faye Dunaway) to distract D'Artagnan. But soon, she is D'Artagnan's sworn enemy and she has an unfortunate history with Athos (Oliver Reed) as well. Milady, with Rochefort's help, then turns to her personal agenda. Can D'Artagnan save Constance, defeat Rochefort, slip de Winter's ire, and stay free of the Cardinal? It's all for one and one for all in this rollicking sequel (filmed simultaneously) to Dick Lester's The Three Musketeers.

By far the best adaptation to the classic novel by Dumas. Split into two the film picks up the adventures of young D'Artagnon as he arrives in Paris. Comedy turns from Spike Milligan as D'Artagnon's landlord and great performance from the main cast, including Racheal Welsh as Constance and a fabulous turn from Charlton Heston as a truly chilling Richlieu. I have seem all the versions of this tale from the jolly version by Gene Kelly through to the pantomime version starring Kiefer Sutherland and Tim Curry, and these versions stick closer to the story, taking few liberties and providing some genuine comic moments. Brilliantly directed by Richard Lester the film stands the test of time with its script and the clumsy fight scenes (deliberately so) as the brawling musketeers fight their way out of the Cardinal's clutches. A great film and for this price who can go wrong.
