David Lynch, creator of Twin Peaks and acclaimed director of 'Eraserhead', 'Blue Velvet' and 'Wild At Heart', directs this bizarre but true story of courage and human dignity. John Hurt gives the performance of a lifetime as John Merrick, the worst "freak" known to Victorian medical science, a man whose body is hideously distorted into a grotesque parody of an elephant.

Rescued from a travelling freak show by Sir Frederick Treves, Merrick gradually reveals himself to be a strangely sweet and gentle man, remarkably unembittered by the degradation and torment he suffered at the circus.

Beautifully shot by Freddie Francis and with an excellent supporting cast including Sir John Gielgud, Anne Bancroft and Dame Wendy Hiller, 'The Elephant Man' is a compelling, moving and enchanting story. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.

Director of the bizarre David Lynch made a slightly more normal feeling film with John Hurt as the real life John Merrick a.k.a the 'Elephant Man'.
The film goes from Merrick in a circus to becoming a respected figure throughout London, helped along the way by a surgeon named Frederick Treves(Sir Anthony Hopkins). The story is both uplifting and moving and is beautifully directed by Lynch and the cast are fantastic.10/10

I only watched this film recently, as I've heard plenty about it, but never wanted to see it. But I bought it on a whim, and i'm so glad i did. I never realised how emmotive the film was going to be, but from the moment it started, i was hooked. And i have to admit to crying my heart out, unexpectedly! It was a powerful and sensitive film, which was beautifully performed by every actor, as they all made the film so memorable.

A must in any collection..and I defy anyone who doesn't feel a tug on their heart strings! Absolutely spectacular!

 Classic, beautiful, heartbreaking...

I first saw this film when I was 8-9. I expected a scary thriller about a 'freak', what I saw was one of the most beautiful yet heartbreaking things I have ever seen. I appreciate the true value of this film now more than I did then. The writing, the acting, the story, the message. Despite it's 'historical inacuracies', it remains one of my favourite films.

Buy it, especially for it's great extra features.
