Production is excellent, story is great; it's far more believable than previous "alternate timeline" episodes. The sets are fantastic, most of the effects totally up to par. This is without doubt one of the best "double episodes" that the Stargate team have ever produced. The film does not have the edge of your seat tension that some double episodes had, and the ending is a little bit of an anti-climax, and this will no doubt get the action addicts complaining, but the majority of Stargate fans will love it.
If I have a tiny complaint, it is that there are loads and loads of great actors from the series appearing in the film, but I would have liked to have seen some playing much larger parts. Jack, for example, just doesn't spend enough time on the screen for me.
All in all, very highly recommended for the Stargate fan.
Right on the heals of Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Stargate Continuum sees the SG-1 team return for its second outing on the direct to DVD format. Unlike Ark of Truth, which wrapped up the story ark of seasons 9 and 10 of Stargate SG-1, Continuum is a self contained movie, that marks the return of fans favourite Richard Dean Anderson and Don S Davis in his final Stargate appearance. While SG-1 attends the execution of Ba'al, the last of the Goa'uld System Lords, Teal'c and Vala inexplicably disappear into thin air. Carter, Daniel and Mitchell race back to a world where history has been changed: the Stargate program has been erased from the timeline.
The difference between the series and Continuum is noticeable from the start, showing what the production team at Stargate can do with a little freedom of an increase running time and budget. Compared to the typical episode, Continuum has a much broader scope, involving great panning shots in the artic, a much deeper tone in the shooting style and great visual effects.
Like with any production there are some criticisms, including the limited screen time of Richard Dean Anderson and the use of some stock footage from SG-1. However is more than easy to over look these thanks an excellent musical score and great acting from the cast, indicating that they still enjoy playing these characters after 10 years.
All in all, Continuum is as enjoyable, as it is significant for the fans as a sign of things to comes, proving that the franchise still has legs and a long way to go.
The style is very much what has been missed from Stargate, it truly goes back to the 'old' style of writing, this being a good thing. A hell of a film with plenty of 'in jokes' for the core Stargate fans. however I believe lacking as the end of Stargate. Without giving out the story, sadly Stargate command is only seen once during the film which is quite disappointing. But still a must see for all Stargate fans, I do recommend it.
Ark of truth was such a disappointment, Continuum was not! It ticks all the right boxes, if you love SG1 you will love this, buy it!
I have never (and I mean never) seen even one episode of Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis but I read the synopsis for this when it showed on Sky Anytime TV and it sounded like something I would watch so I gave it a shot and was blown away the power of the storyline was one that rarely ever graces our TV screens. You've made me a fan for life!
