Written by E.Nesbit, author of 'The Railway Children', this is the movie of five childrens' chance encounter with 'The Psammead' - an ancient, extremely irritable, sand fairy who has the ability to make wishes come. The only problem is that the wishes only last till sunset and the children also find it hard to think of sensible wishes!

Another film starring the very underrated talent that is Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the chocolate factory), this is an engaging war-time family fantasy with a fairy-tale fitting creature, 'It', who grants all his wishes with a downside. A nice tale of brothers and sisters, and one harsh little scientist, set in picturesque countryside to the backdrop of the father-fighting in the war- whom they miss. I was pleasantly surprised overall, see if you can be too.
A great film for everyone in the family

Another film made for children but even better viewing for adults. Eddie Izzard ad libbing as the sand fairy is great, the children don't have that cloying Hollywood sweetness and the adults play their parts beautifully but without eclipsing the children. Funny and sentimental by turns but never sickly sweet-great film!
