 A Superb 60s Classic

| | See all filmfence's reviews (17)

The characters are crisp and tough in this 1960's classic film version of a BBC play.
Highly controversial in its day the film was deemed by many to be unfit for general viewing as it addressed many of the harder aspects of working class London asit emerged form the post war era. Poor working conditions, aggressive society and early days of free love resulting in unwanted pregnancy and abortion are just some of the issues this film handles so brilliantly. The antidote to the harsh realities of life is Polly (Suzy Kendall) the up-market girl from Chelsea who crosses the Thames to find out exactly what working life is all about. Life hits Polly hard and quickly as she learns just how different it is when you don't have much of anything.
A young Dennis Waterman, a typical Alfie Bass and the classic 'teenager' Adrienne Posta (is there a film of this genre and era in which she doesn't appear?) provide the Battersea style colour and drama.
The bonus is Its great for 60's fashion, culture and music. It's an excellent film and a must see for the fan of movies of this 'never had it so good' decade.

If you have a fascination for 60's British films this portrayal of day to day life in 60's London is a bit grim and miserable but everyone gets on with their life, but hopes for better things..

Polly (Suzy Kendall) plays a very rich girl from Chelsea who thinks she wants to be working class so moves to Battersea to earn her own living finding a job in a factory, there she becomes friends with sisters Sylvie (Maureen Lipman) and Rube (Adrienne Posta) and finds Peter (Dennis Waterman) a delivery boy as a boyfriend who is desperate to escape his poor working class life and sees an opportunity with Polly. Polly moves into a rundown flat and tries to create her own romantic notion of working class life.

Hard hitting when it was released in 1968, the film touches on domestic violence, racism and goes into more detail on the taboo of abortion. Hylda Baker plays the abornist Mrs McCarthy and plays the role horrifically well.

This film followed closely on the success and style of `A Taste of Honey', 'A Kind of Loving', `Saturay Night Sunday Morning' etc.

The film manages to capture the atmosphere of the time including the clothes, music, hair and make up.

There are wonderful performances from the cast, but particularly Dennis Waterman and the evergreen actress Maureen Lipman.
